Advantages: Brighton is a beautiful and fun City

Disadvantages: The Uni staff were horrible and unhelpful

My experience here was very different from others but it was definitely not any where near as fun and exciting as I wanted and imagined from what other people told me about their Sussex experience!

I started at Sussex in October 2008. I put down for my residents to be in a loud house and I didn't mind where as it was just as long as it was ON campus as it is an on campus Uni. So I stared with high hopes and went down to collect my keys only to find out I was OFF campus. I wasn't too down trodden by this because I spoke to the people there and they said it really made very little difference as I was so close any why and I would still be sharing with other students of the same year.

So still in a good and optimistic mood about everything I ventured to find my house. I got there on a road called Florence Road which is a beautiful road with really large house and on a lovely hill. There were trees all along the pavement more like an avenue and it was quiet and peaceful. Perfect for a family! My room inside the house (of which there were 11) was actually very big and spacious which was great. This was the only good thing. The widow frames were rotten wood and when I prodded the wood my finger went the entire way through!!!! There was mould up the walls and the amount of dust was impressive.

My flat mates ALL spoke other languages and rarely spoke English. I play 7 instruments and listen to music all the time as it is my life. Guess what; apparently I was too loud for them. The campus itself was £300 pounds a year and 40 minutes away. I cannot explain how difficult it was to get involved with a group there and find a sort of base where it is easy to get to know and get involved with the whole social side of Uni - the most important thing!!!!

So the obvious thing to be would be to ask to switch to an on site house. I tried this again and again and never would they let me change. I heard of empty rooms in about 20 different houses but still they were apparently waiting for someone to occupy them - this didn't happen the entire first term! I could have stayed there at least then. Even after telling them there was rotten wood, mould, a house that didn't like me, nothing happened they were trying to keep the landlord happy or something. The only way I could get on to campus was if I paid for both the rooms!

Literally no one helped me in this situation and as a result I decided to leave £5000 in debt and with nothing to show for it.

Summary: i had a very unhappy time with no help from anyone!
