Advantages: Beautiful town, cheap alcohol, if you're a moron then you'll be in great company.
Disadvantages: The town is full of morons. Intelligence is frowned upon.
I've been here for almost a year now, and when I look back at on my hopes and dreams for this place I realise how naive I've been.
Aberystwyth is rated highly in the student satisfaction tables, but also boasts one of the highest student suicide rates. So what are the reasons for this? Well, the majority of people who go to Aberystwyth University are vapid, vacuous morons who fill their meaningless lives with alcohol in the numerous, noisy, overcrowded pubs with crappy food and nowhere to sit. Moreover, You will not find anywhere else in the world where it is so hard to strike up a conversation. Not because the people in Aber are unpleasant, quite the opposite, but because the vast majority of students in Aber have nothing remotely interesting worth talking about, except perhaps the extent of their hangover or the last person they slept with. This means that for the poor souls like myself who actually like intelligent conversation and doing things other than getting completely plastered, have little to do other than consider how they might go about ending their miserable lives.
I'm not finished yet, it gets worse. The women in Aber have the magical combination of being both ugly and stupid. Unless you're also ugly and stupid, don't go to Aberystwyth University. Still, every so often you will come across a girl who even when compared with your average woman, is quite good looking but don't get your hopes up. She's probably a whore and will have slept with every member of the American football team at least three times and will have had at one point, and will have every single STI under the sun.
From what I can tell (this being somewhat difficult seeing as I'm a straight man) the most of the men on campus fall into a similar category to the women. There is a well established rugby and american football team, and so if well built, arrogant wankers are your thing, then you should give Aber a go.
It's not all bad though. Aberystwyth is incredibly beautiful, with lots of well maintained walks and more beach than you could possibly want. As with everything else in Aber though, there is a slight caveat: it's covered in three seasons of the year before the tourists arrive and the council decide to clean it up. Still, given the alternative, a long walk along the sea front on your own (the majority of the student population don't appreciate what a beautiful town they live in) might well be the best course of action; and, if you do decide that suicide is a viable option after all, there are plenty of places where you can kill yourself and be washed ashore the next day to the delight of the locals.
So to summarise, there's nothing inherantly wrong with Aberystwyth, just the people who inhabit it. If you're not a vapid moron, go somewhere else. You won't regret it.
Summary: Great if you're a moron, crap if you're not.

- 12/06/09 I'm very confused. Despite the fact that the Aberystwyth described bears no resemblance to the town and population I know intimately, the review is so full of vitriol and unsubstantiated slander as to make it barely worth taking seriously. Although I suspect by generating this amount of debate it is a lucrative review! |

- 11/01/09 great- i am a stupid ugly whore who doesnt have the intelligence to hold a conversation, amazing realy how I ever got into university in the first place.
The writer of this review probally only got into to aber through clearing so had limited choice, he probally got rejected by the rugby team which is why he hates them so much, and probally didnt get laid- but not through the lack of trying which is why he feels the need to insult all the girls of aber.
maybe if the writer had spent a bit more time socialising with people instead of his lonely walks around aber he might have enjoyed himself a bit more |

- 17/12/08 You’re judgement of Aber being full of “morons” is unfounded and basically wrong. If you choose to spend time with people who you deem “morons” then that is idiotic on your part. However, it sounds clear that you have made no friends whilst being at Aber Uni, otherwise you would not group everyone there in the same category as “morons”, which does imply something about your character if you cannot get along with at least a few from around 8000 students.
How you can claim intelligence is frowned on is a comment that destroys the objective of the university. I study Maths, which I have been encouraged, by lecturers, tutors, friends and random people I have met to do well in and excel at.
Intellectual conversation can be found with many people but if someone is going to act arrogantly and superior then may people will take a dislike and be unlikely to show any interest in having a decent conversation.
How can you have the self-importance to judge every woman in Aber and class the all under the titles of “ugly” and “stupid”? Then to claim that if there is a good-looking girl she is a whore clearly shows you’re priorities when it comes to looks and brains, yet you claim that intelligence and intellectual conversations are important. This is a shallow, unfounded and plainly wrong comment that implies your stupidity rather then theirs. Also congratulations on judging all males in Aber by the male rugby and American football teams, I have met people off both and although they can (although I do not presume to have the arrogance to say all) be “arrogant wankers”, many, especially when not with their team, can hold pleasant conversations.
I do agree with you that Aberystwyth is beautiful, it has stunning views, walks and beaches, which, especially when the sun is out, can be a joy to spend time in. These are some of the features that attracted me to Aber and I plan to enjoy them the rest of my time there. To claim that the students do not appreciate them is to disregard one of the main features of Aber in their choice of University. When I made my decision on which university to chose, I looked at many aspects including location, course content and quality, student’s thoughts of the uni, the sports facilities, accommodation etc. Never, did I go around looking at the students trying to see if they were “ugly” and basing my choice on that. Granted, looks are important in the initial physical attraction and do play a part in longer relationships but to make such a large comment about this implies that you believed university to be more of a dating agency then a place of study. I did not go to uni expecting to find someone I wanted to be with but do not rule it out. However, if you are not looking for a relationship but rather a more physical less meaningful thing then you have no grounds to call the women of Aber “whores”. |
