Advantages: Student Union is really nice, Good national reputation.

Disadvantages: It's a bit isolated!

I have applied to University for admission this year (2009) and have therefore been to various open days etc. I must stress prior to starting that I am not a student at the University of Aberystwyth, but I have visited and looked around the place, so my review will cover the more superficial elements to the University, and what I thought of it from my visit.

Aberystwyth is a town in West Wales, which unfortunately, you are only able to get to from England and South Wales via one one incredibly windy road. This means does mean the journey time is usually a considerable number of hours. It's a beautiful little city though, and upon reaching it, you will feel very much at home, aslong as the weather is nice.

Before you reach the actual City, you'll drive along the Welsh Coast and you'll get some really good views over the water. Aberystwyth is a seaside town, and this makes it particularly attractive to people who like being near the sea. It must be nice to be able to pop to the beach during University Free periods when the weather is hot.

The city itself is quite small, yet quite busy. There is a nice sized highstreet with all the usual outlets, like WHSmith and LLoyds Tsb etc It's also home to the national Library of Wales, one of six legal deposit Libraries in Britain, which recieves a copy of every book published here! I'm sure that such a massive Library would proove a very useful resource for students.

I believe there is more than one University Campus, and that one of the Campuses teaches Agriculture and things like that. Apparently Aberystwyth is world class for Agriculture and Equine Studies.

I visited the main campus (Penglais maybe?) and saw many of the buildings, including the new International Politics building, where I also listened to a lecture. It was very good, and the theatre was very nice.

One of the really good things about Aberystwyth is the Student Union. It's really nice! The Alcohol is very reasonable, it looks nice, with comfy seats and plenty of space, and also has large televisions and pool tables etc. I guess the ambiance of the Student Union was really good in general.

Overall a very good University, which seems even better when you consider some of the absoloutely massive Scholarships it offers! I definately recommend visiting Aberystwyth and considering it for the future.

Summary: I really liked what I saw!

Sorry about the rating, but, with such limited experience at the moment I think this has limited value to the potential student. Be great to hear what you think of whatever institution you end up at later this year! Good luck!

Hehe, it's a town not a city and I do believe there's more than 1 road in to it... for example, if you're going from the West Midlands you won't see the coast before you get there. Although, there is only one main railway in & out. :)

Aberystwyth is indeed scenic in the sun, although the town gets boring fast ...
