I wish I knew how much I was saving!

A while ago on Martin's money tips there was a story on how to reduce the amount of electricity you waste and the article spoke out power saving devices. Although this product was not mentioned by name on a quick search of the internet I found this one priced relatively cheaply at £17 on eBay.

The reason I bought it was to help cut down the time I have things on standby in my house. By my television I had an abundance of plugs that are stuck in an adapter connected to a single plug socket in the wall. One of the plugs is for my internet and the others are for my phone, set top box, tv, dvd player, blu ray player and so on. This is a lot of items that are always on standby and costing me money. Through this device I can have everything plugged in but I can turn the standby feature off so that I am not wasting any electricity.

==How to use and how it works==

The adapter has 6 plug sockets that you can plug electrical items in that you do not always need on, for example the television and set top box. These six sockets are controlled by a remote switch which needs pushing in order to allow the flow of electricity to these specified items. This switch can be attached to the wall at a convenient and reachable location so that you do not have bend down in awkward positions like I used to have to do to reach the plugs behind the TV! This is much easier than individually unplugging the items to turn them off. At the end of the 6 sockets are two separate ones that are not controlled by the remote switch and are always 'on.' This is perfect for things like a modem or phone that always need to be left on to work.

Other than the addition of the remote switch, the adapter works like any other adapter and has one lead coming out of the base of the device that is fitted with a three pin UK plug and fits into the plug socket. The lead is around 2 m long so there is plenty of lead to get mixed up with all the other leads behind the TV!
The remote switch comes with a wall mounting kit and runs on a A23 battery. I have not mounted mine though and keep it on top of the set top box. I was thinking of mounting it next to the light switch but it is not a cool design. I have brass switches around the front room and this plastic white box would look out of place.

      ==Overall==

I have no idea what I am saving by using this device but I like to think that every little bit helps. Although it is not all about money and like the idea that this is helping with my carbon footprint! All in all, I'm pleased with this energy saving device and find it reliable and trustworthy.

        Advantages

        Disadvantages

I award an average rating of 3 stars due to its limited control features.

Although the cost of electrical goods is becoming more and more competitive we do still spend thousands a year on the latest technology for our homes. Whether it be a 50" flatscreen TV or the latest Smartphone or Home Entertainment system. Protecting high-end electrical goods from a power surge when plugged in is essential and the Belkin Conserve Energy Saving 8-Outlet Surge Protector is a great product to fill this gap.

I only own one of these Belkin Surge Protectors and I also have other brands of ptotection dotted around power 'hotspots'. As this product can accommodate 8 plugs it is essential to have trustworthy surge protection asnd as it is a Belkin product I am happy with this due to my trust of the brand. The 8-gang board is split into two sections. The pad nearest the cable has two sockets on it which are permanently switched on (unless you turn the wall socket power off) and the other 6 sockets are controlled with one switch. This is useful for things like a Home PC where you need to turn on a number of plugs at the same time. The two permanantly 'ON' sockets are ideal for if you wish to use it for your Home Entertainment. If you wish to keep your Sky Box and DVD player constantly on then you can do, leaving the flick of a switch to turn appliances such as TV and surround sound system on. Ultimately the above is what lets the product down for me. If it had individual socket control then it would be much more useful and flexible and waste even less energy!

The added bonus of this product is that it has a remote control. Although it is on the large side, the other issue is that you would probably want to hide an 8-gang plug adaptor out of site, so use of the remote control is limited for me personally. The negatives dont end there unfortunately. The white colour gives it a cheap look and finish. The 2 metre flex isn't bad but the product could definately have done with more thought put into it. Priced at around £20-£25 they are quite reasonable considering this is an 8-gang with surge protection.

The Belkin 8-gang surge protection is a handy product, I just feel there are better products available for less money. I have never used all 8 sockets at once and see it more of a health and safety hazzard than not needing them all, but overall I would choose a smaller size and one with individually controlled sockets.

        A Good Product

Working in IT it's instilled in you that you should protect expensive equipment properly from every eventuality and that's why I believe that it is important, even in the home, to protect high end electrical goods with a good Surge Protector Socket. I purchased one of these from Amazon for about £25 and have since bought a 2nd.

Personally I have a couple of these in the flat, one that protects my TV, DVD Player, Hi-Fi System and Cable box and another which protects my computer and modem. I always like to make sure that I have a couple of spare sockets as you never know when you might need them. The plug board has a 2 metre flex and is white in colour.

There are 8 Sockets on the plug board, so plenty of sockets for all your electrical devices. One very nice feature about this plug board is that you can turn 6 of the plugs of with one switch and 2 are left of permanently, unless you turn the power off at the mains wall socket. Turning items which you may normally leave on stand-by, such as your TV, can save you quite a few quid over the course of a year. The switches that are permanently on are useful for alarm clocks. Another use I could think of would be in the kitchen. You would want to keep your fridge on at all times, but not your washing machine.

This is also operated using a remote control, which is a bit on the large side but is great if you have the sockets tucked away out of sight. I can't be the only one, who's partner who wants things neat and out of sight. The remote control can operate the switches from range too. You don't have to be in the same room.

An improvement to the product would be if you could remotely switch each of the 6 sockets on and off instead of switching them all off or all on. That's why I have electrical items that I would normally have on at the same time plugged into one plug board.

Overall it is a good product. I would like to see a smaller remote and the improvements noted above for it to be a 5 star product. Still, it's well worth the money and I would recommend it to friends and family

        Disadvantages

        A good product

If you are using a desktop or laptop computer along with a printer/ scanner/ copier then you ought to have all these items plugged into a decent quality surge protecting socket. However surge protecting sockets are useful for plugging in other electrical items into also, making them a really handy thing to have around the home and office too. With this in mind we purchased a Belkin product which we felt would meet our needs and its been a good buy so far.

        **********************************************************
The beauty of the Belkin conserve surge protector we bought was that it also came with a remote switch, which I find can help with power wastage when items you have used are left on standby for long periods of time. The remote can be used to switch off up to six electrical items that you have plugged into the surge protector. Making switching off of each an every item you have plugged into the outlet, a much quicker and easier job.

The clever part about the product that I like, is the fact that there are also 2 outlets designed to be always on. This means that you can keep an answer phone or router powered at all times, if thats what you need. This to me means that the product is extra useful as I can leave the answer machine switched on and yet everything else I don't need goes off.

        **********************************************************
This simple to use remote energy saving capability offered by the Belkin surge protector outlet, has helped to slightly reduce our consumption of electricity, which means lower bills for us and less environmental effects caused to the planet. To me thats a win - win situation for everyone.

In terms of what we paid for the item, I can say it was just under £20. I feel thats a good price considering the price of simple extension sockets that do not have the handy extra features of our Belkin outlet. With even those cheaper surge protecting items coming very close to what we paid, I feel that we got good value for money.

        **********************************************************
We have found that the remote works from a fair distance away and you don't even need to be within sight of the main unit for it to work. Although we have been in the same room as the outlet when using it, so I am not saying you can operate the remote from the garden etc, as I have not tried that....yet!

The number of full sockets you can access fully does depend on the size of the plugs attached to the electrical items you are using. This can sometimes make it difficult to get all the available sockets on the unit in use at the same time, so perhaps there ought to have been a bit more space between them.

        **********************************************************
The fact that the unit is also a surge protector means that I have extra peace of mind when using anything I have plugged into the device. I know that my equipment is safely protected from surges (sudden increased voltage) in power whilst in use.

If a large enough surge or spike was to occur, my stuff would be ok, as its routed through the outlet. Without the protector they could suffer damage during a surge, which may in time cause my electrical items to fail more quickly than they would, than if I had them plugged into the Belkin outlet.

        **********************************************************
I feel that the product is of good quality and would recommend it without hesitation, the 3 status showing LEDS on the device are a nice touch too.

It is a shame that you cannot switch off just one or two sockets and this is my only complaint really, as I would have liked to have been able to select whether I wanted to switch off all 6 outlets or just 1. The fact that the other 2 out of the 8 sockets can remain on at all times, is a bonus though and does make up for the fact that the other 6 do all go off at once.

Over all I am giving this a 4 star rating and think that its a nice little product that does what I want it to. It will take a bit of time to set up, but once you get that done it works well.
