The Hewlett Packard Extended Life Battery is a grand tool for making your laptop run longer for those times when it is hard to recharge using a power cord. I recently bought this more because my original HP laptop was not running with enough battery as it used to. However I am not reviewing the laptop but the battery and found that the battery is definitely useful.
The extended life battery does exactly what the name implies, it extends the battery life your laptop. Some say (as the description above) says it can give up to six hours. Mine was initially around that with a good six to seven hours if I had charged it previously giving my laptop a HUGE amount of time without having to charge it through a plug. The power of the battery seems to be going down a bit since I have been using it a lot however it still very high and effective.
On the go and cannot charge? Definitely consider this extended life battery as it will help in emergencies! It is as simple as plugging it in towards the back.
The big drawback is that the price is kind of steep. Nowadays, some laptops are getting cheaper and buying this for the purpose that your laptop is old may not be a good reason. If you have a newer laptop and want MUCH more battery life than you currently have for certain reasons that definitely check this out. However, try upgrading your laptop instead of buying an extended life battery if your current battery does not work as well.
I suspect many people like me with an older laptop will struggle for battery life.
If you've had your laptop for a while and generally run it off the mains, you often find that when you do rely on your battery, it very quickly runs out on you and there is little more annoying than this happening to you at the most inconvenient moment. Once you're juiced up again, you're never quite sure whether the files you were working on will have been recovered.
In recent years, technology and with it, battery life has got a lot better. With trains now featuring electric sockets, it's not the problem for me that it once was, so I now use this hardly at all.
I am currently toying with the idea of either upgrading the laptop or buying a new laptop battery and see if I can get another year or two out of this one. Depending on the option chosen, this extended life battery may find itself on ebay. If at any point you change your laptop from an HP, then this item becomes pretty much redundant because it is especially designed for HP machines only. That's a potential drawback.
I confess to not knowing this clip-on battery pack existed until 3 years ago when the IT director at work recommended it. It is constructed in such a way as to clip neatly underneath your laptop via the integrated clips. The idea is that you carry it separately within your laptop bag and when you envisage using your laptop on the battery for an extended period just plug it on and you will find that, depending on what and how you use your laptop and of course the power settings, you could get maybe a further 4-5 hours life out of it. Manufacturers claim up to 6, but I've never had that much.
It does add a bit to the bulkiness and weight of your laptop, but that's no real issue.
When fitting it, it is a bit fiddly to get it correctly seated on its clips. That's the only thing that is mildly irritating, because if the connection isn't a good one, you may find out too late that the extra battery life you thought you had spare may not be available to you.
My experience has been that you should fit it before you turn your laptop on. It's much easier to seat it correctly if your laptop is closed and upside down because you can see what you are doing then it is to struggle to fit it 'blind' whilst your laptop is open and the lid gets in the way.
When so many of us now rely on our laptop for everyday use and feel naked without it, it's good to know that you can work anywhere using this product and not have to worry over much about that little battery icon in the bottom right hand corner.
I had the pleasure of owning an extended life battery as part of my corporate laptop package with one of my previous employers. I never previously realised that these existed and was pleasantly surprised by the battery add-on for stnadard HP laptops.
The first and most important aspect of the Extended Life Battery is its performance. Prior to getting one, my laptop would perform well if it worked for an hour and a half without the need to recharge its juices. This is fairly standard across most 15 inch laptops and indeed across the whole laptop range. The bolt-on clips very easily into pre-made jacks on the underside of the laptop and easily allows you to work for an additional 4-5 hours. This meant that the laptop could be taken to an offsite meeting for an entire day without the need for a charger which was particularly useful in my line of business.
The battery is very compact and easily fits into any of the additional compartments in your laptop bag. I was also pleasantly surprised by the relatively low weight of this gadget as I expected it to be extremely heavy. While by no means light, it does not add a lot of weight to a bag typically containing a laptop & a folder with paperwork.
In terms of visual design, it also does very well. The design is neutral and non-intrusive. The colour matches that of the laptop and it looks very natural bolted onto the back. An extra benefit is when using this on a desk or your lap, it allows for an extended airflow below the bulk of your laptop which stops it overheating and damaging the internal components. This ensures that your laptop lasts considerably longer than it otherwise would.
