If you use a computer on a regular basis you will know that although at first it's running well but soon the damn thing is cluttered up with unnecessary files slowing down your system and eating your hard drive space! That is where Piriforms CCleaner comes in.

CCWhat?
CCleaner is a piece of optimization software designed to keep your computer in top shape. It does many things including cleaning out old temporary files and junk that you accumulate while browsing the internet. The application is pleasant to look at and has recently been updated with a slick black look. If you are unsure of your system specifications (which I know many people are!) CCleaner is here for you as it displays them in the panel. Knowing your system specs is essential for when you're purchasing software for your computer.

On the cleaner itself there are four main buttons, Cleaner, Registry, Tools and Options. The cleaner portion has options for Windows, which is for Internet Explorer and other Windows components. There is an advanced section but if you are not sure what to do don't mess with these options! The second portion is for Applications you may have installed on your computer such as Mozilla Firefox. Cleaning out the junk is as simple as pressing two buttons. Firstly press analyze, you will then be given a status report of what can be deleted and if you need to close any applications before the cleaning can be done. Once you are ready simply press the Run Cleaner button and voila your system will be spick and span!

The second main function is a registry cleaner again this is very simple to use, simply select the portions of your registry you want to be scanned then press Scan for Issues, when the scan is done press Fix selected issues, you will then be asked if you want to create a backup for your registry, the first time you do this you will want to say yes as messing up your registry can make your PC unusable. In all my time using it CCleaner has never messed anything up but it's best to be safe rather than sorry!

The Tools section consists of a handy uninstaller section where it will show you all the programs installed on your PC and give you options to uninstall them, rename them, delete them if they are invalid entries or you can save the list of installed programs to a list which can be handy if you want to show someone what's installed on your PC or something. You may not think an uninstaller is anything special but you'd be surprised about how many modern programs don't give you an uninstall option in the start menu. Also in the tools section is a Startup manager this is really useful and can speed up your PC dramatically if you have many unnecessary things starting up with Windows.

The last tab Options allows you to control the programs behaviour, setting up the options, language, etc. As well as a few other things such as if you like to use certain sites that use cookies (these are used to store info about your visit and load personal settings) you can choose not to have them deleted in CCleaners junk scan. There is a similar function for files as you can exclude certain files for junk scans if you wish. If you need to dispose of files securely you can use this tab to set up CCleaners secure deletion function. Finally there is an about CCleaner where you can check the latest version and view new additions to the program in the the version history.
