CCleaner (or Crap Cleaner as it used to be known) is a powerful system cleaning utility that's totally free and is very simple to use.

You can download the latest version from www.ccleaner.com, the file is small at just over 3mb. Once downloaded, installation is quick and easy, but just make sure that you pay attention when going through the installer as by default it adds desktop shortcuts and a new toolbar onto your browser - you might want to uncheck these!

CCleaner goes through your system and deletes your old and temporary files that are associated with certain applications - mainly browsers such as Internet Explorer, Firefox, Google Chrome, Safari etc. Over time, your system saves lots of files that you won't need: images from web sites, old pages from your ancient history etc. These old files will eventually clog-up your system and slow down performance - this is where CCleaner comes in. Simply run it, selecting which files to delete and it'll wizz through your system and speed things up for you.

The interface is professionally designed and you don't need much computer knowledge to be able to run it - simply select which applications to clean, click the run button and CCleaner will get to work cleaning your system. The cleaning can take quite a while depending on how much crap you have on your system, but when it's finished you'll see a handy report that tells you exactly what's been deleted and how much free space has been created.
