Download Accelerator Plus
by Judd345 Ever find yourself waiting on a download??? Well wait no more. This handy little programme splits the download into 5 separate connections then downloads them together, so making the download up to 10x quicker. Not only does it speed up your downloads to the max, it has a resume option for most of the downloads, so ... if complications happen and the download is stopped no need to cry just press resume. To add to that all downloads can be pre-checked by your anti-virus using the options, covering another aspect of security. The one criticism I have is the user friendly aspect. I believe that you must have some experience of computer usage to use this programme because there is loads of jargon, options and different screens that will baffle you, I mean, I fix computers and at first I was confused. But if waiting for a file to complete is just too much then go for DAP, I will be honest, I personally wouldn't go as far as to purchase the premium version, it's not that good but definitely an asset for any PC. cPanel
by FowlerFP cPanel is a very popular web hosting control panel. It allows you to quickly and easily manage your hosting account. The latest release of cPanel is cPanel version 11 (Version 11.23.6 to be exact). cPanel 11 allows you to easily upload and manage your files on your web hosting account through the 2 file managers available in ... cPanel 11. cPanel 10 originally only came with 1 file manager. cPanel 11 has come with that file manager from the previous version (although slightly improved with the ability to download files through it) and it comes with a brand new file manager with alot new features that the previous version didn't have to make it easier to manage and upload files. It has a search function to help find a file that you might have lost in all your files, there is also a compress feature so you can compress files and directories actually on your server which makes it alot easier and faster to backup your site. There is also another editor for you to edit files with as well as in line file renaming aswell as other little new additions and tweaks to the old features. cPanel shows alot of statistics about your account on the main index page. It tells you all the basic information like file space and bandwidth used down to all the information about what version of cPanel you have and the build Apache version, kernel version, cPanel theme version and the php and MySQL version the server is running as well as other information. Additionally there are graphical displays to show the important information such as disk space used, bandwidth used, domains/sub-domains used as well as databases and mailing lists used. This just makes it easier to see at first glance how much you have left of any of the main features and so on. There is also the chance to be notified if your account is running low on disk space, bandwidth or when one of your webmail email accounts is now about to hit the limit. This is good for the people that only log into cPanel when they need to do something (like me) so they may not be aware that bandwidth was running low or whatever. cPanel also has a service status feature to show you advanced information (improved alot since cPanel 10) so you can see if any part of the server is down such as MySQL, webmail, FTP and so on so in the case of a problem it can easily be seen if that particular service is down. Additionally Cpanel offers many other features to help manage your hosting account like: - phpMyAdmin to help manage your MySQL databases - Backup option to easily back up your account - Web disk to allow you to manage your account on your computer - Virus scaner to check for malicious files that may have been uploaded through exploits - Logs to get details on visitors and to track and malicious visitors. My experiences with cPanel are very good. I have used other control panels such as vista panel and Plesk control panel although i did find that weren't as advanced and easy to use as cPanel was. cPanel is the most used control panel by hosts as it is well known so users look for it when looking for hosts, it offers alot of features and it is easy to use whether you are a beginner and new to web hosting or advanced. I have never come across and issues with any features and everything has worked fine for the last 18 months i have been using cPanel. They are very quick to fix issues and especially security issues with it. As with other popular software cPanel has been known to have a few major security issues in the past but cPanel is widely used and is a big target for hackers so hackers do concentrate more of finding exploits in software tat is very widely used as it is more worthwhile for them. Download Accelerator Plus
by Sensmas Download Accelerator Plus (DAP) version 5 is the latest version of this hugely popular download utility. If, like me, you spend a lot of time downloading files from the net then you will probably have heard of these utilities before. Gozilla is a well known variety of this kind of program. So why choose DAP? ... Basically, it does exactly what it claims to do. I have a dial up connection with a 56k modem and a 2 hour cut off on my ISP. If you have something similar then you'll know what a nightmare it is to download anything of a reasonably large file size. DAP solved that problem for me. It works by finding "mirror" sites. These are basically sites that offer the same download as the one you want. It does this very quickly, typically taking less than a second or two. It then begins to download the chosen file from the site you are on whilst simultaneously downloading the same file from several of the other sites it has found. DAP allows you to choose which sites to download from although I've found it is better to just let DAP choose for you as it automatically picks those with the fastest transfer speeds. By connecting to several sites at once, it ensures that you receive the fastest possible download. Not only that but it also protects you against download failures. If one download gets cut off, the programs continues to download from the other sites. This eliminates the endless re-starting that I'm sure you have all experienced at some time or another. So, that's the theory but does it work? Well I really did notice a significant difference to my download speed. Files leapt on to my machine 3 to 4 times faster than they previously did. My partner commented on the fast download times before she even knew I'd installed DAP so it wasn't just because I was looking for a speed increase. I could not believe the difference it made. As if that wasn't enough, whereas most downloa d managers save all downloads to the same default folder, DAP creates a different folder for each file extension so all your movie clips are stored in one folder, all your text files in another and so on. This makes finding your files much easier. Okay, so faster downloads may be the main reason to get this utility but that's not all it does. Another great feature is the ability to resume your downloads. In laymans terms this means that if your connection is interrupted either by yourself or by outside influences (ISP cut off etc), DAP remembers where it got to and offers you the option to resume later. Select "yes" and provided the download site supports resume capability (the vast majority of sites do support this nowadays) you can click to continue the download at any time and it'll pick up where it left off rather than starting over. There is a built in scheduler in the DAP options which allows you to schedule a download to take place at a certain time. It can be made to dial up and connect to the net, then find the site and download the file before disconnecting from the net and even shutting down the pc if you so wish. This is great for those times when you need to download a large file but can't let it interfere with your work. Schedule the download for after you've gone to bed and leave it to do everything for you. What a great touch! As with most download utilities, once the download is complete you are given the option to run the file. I tend not to use this as I always virus scan anything I download before running it but the option is there nonetheless. You can set DAP up to play any sound of your choice when a download is complete. The default selection is no sound. DAP itself is available on magazine cover discs almost on a monthly basis but if you don't normally pay out for magazines don't worry. You can download the freeware version from www.download.com, tucows.com and many ot her download sites. The official site is www.speedbit.com and is worth a look. This version has an advert banner at the top of its window but it doesn't really interfere at all. I've never been concerned about it. If you can't put up with the adverts though then simply register the product and they are removed. It costs $29.95 to register the product (yes it was intentional to use american dollars, it's an american program). This is the current price and is reduced from $34.95. Other benefits available after registering the program are : "Better Utilisation of Bandwidth, Tray icon minimization during download, prioritised technical support, your personal activation code (I don't know what this is for) and free updates for the first year worth $10." I very much doubt you'll have any problems working out how to use DAP but if you do there is a help file featuring FAQ's and a support line too. DAP is very user friendly though and the chances are you won't need either of these. I had tried other download utilities before but none of them seemed to make any difference. This one really does. Download it now, it'll be the last slow download you ever make! Read the complete review |
