If you think that a computer virus is something that can be cured with a good ol' injection of antibiotics then I wouldn't bother reading on. However, if you have nightmares about viruses, detest them, hate them, or just generally want to prevent them, then read on.

The McAfee name is one of the most recognisable and reputable in the business. Their products have long been available in different forms as either boxed or shareware and the latest versions promise little more than the first did: to stop those pesky viruses.

I would say that McAfee Virus Scan is a very good product. It's easy to install and easy to use, which is all you can ask - nearly. In terms of actually protecting viruses it seems to be okay. But how can you tell if it really does work? If you get a computer virus, of course.

Now I wouldn't risk asking anyone to send you a virus just to test whether or not your new anti-virus program works, but in reality the effectiveness of McAfee Virus Scan, as with others in the same genre, can only be judged when you get a virus.

Personally, I have never "received" a virus and so assume that McAfee Virus Scan, or myself, must be doing something right. But should I be inflicted tomorrow with a not-so-rare case of "lovebug" that is when I will learn the true value of McAfee Virus Scan. However, with regular virus engine updates posted on the McAfee website, this product seems to do the job. I emphasise the word "seems".
