Norton Utilities 6.0 consists of five main components Speeddisk, Windoctor, CrashGuard, Speed Start and System Doctor to cover almost any maintenance you will ever need to do on your computer. Speed Disk optimizes your disk performance. Speed Disk defragments and reorganizes files on your hard disk for immediate access and they load much faster. For even faster access times, you can also use Speed Disk to optimize a disk?s directory Norton Disk Doctor is probably the most commonly used component of Norton Utilities Norton Disk Doctor gives you powerful, easy-to-use tools to find and repair disk problems. If your startup disk won?t even boot, you can diagnose it by running Norton Disk Doctor from the CD. System Doctor automatically detects disk errors and takes preventative action. There are a couple of Norton utilities you want running at all times. One is System Doctor, which provides vital real-time statistics on your PC?s performance. Another great tool is CrashGuard, which monitors file crashes and freezes You can keep your version of Norton Utilities up to date with LiveUpdate that makes it easy to keep Norton Utilities updated. It downloads application updates and software patches quickly and easily right over the Internet. If you are a demo user, you will have on-line access to patches and updates but Norton Utilities will expire after 30 days.Norton Utilities is a great program which will give complete protection to your computer
I should know what I am doing with computers as I work in the IT Industry, but I have to admit that I have a little helper in keeping my computer ticking over. Ladies and Gentlemen put your hands together for Norton Utilities 2000….. Norton Utilities is a suite of products that are designed to keep your computer running in tip top condition. When you first install the product you have to make some choices that will determine the level of involvement Norton has in your day-to-day use of your computer. You can configure it to be fully in control, but you will then notice things like you have a Norton Protected Recycle Bin where you cant empty the bin without getting Norton to do it for you. You will also have things like System Doctor and Crash Guard running all the time. If you are a computer novice then the extra protection and assistance that you get is probably reassuring, but if you are comfortable with the day-to-day workings of your computer then these will probably get in the way. I personally have the product installed in such a way that it offers the minimum amount of automation, in other words if I say I want to delete something it goes and if I want to check for errors then I have to run the job, I am happier that way. Obviously you can change your mind later, so as you get more comfortable (or uncomfortable) you can switch features on and off. A lot of people don’t know how important the Windows Registry file is, every time you install some software on your computer lots of information is stored in the registry so it grows and grows all the time, when you uninstall a product in theory it cleans the registry, but it never does a complete job so you end up with a lot of clutter like un-referenced files where the registry is pointing to a file that has been deleted and incorrect file associations where the registry thinks it needs to use a certain product to open a type for file, for example the registry k
nows that a .xls file needs to be opened using Excel. Again if you uninstall a product the registry can retail these associations. Using Norton Utilities you can keep your registry clean and tidy because it can identify and remove these dead links. I use this suite of products a lot for keeping my computer tidy and to assist me in diagnosing problems, for the price I would strongly advise you laying out your money in my opinion you cant get a better product. I have tried a number of the free to download products that are available but none are as comprehensive or as reliable as this suite of products. If you just want the high level overview then give up reading now, I know this is a long opinion but I thought it best to give some idea of what each of the utilities does. The rest of the opinion is a description of each utility. There are several groups of utilities within the suite to deal with your specific needs; here is a short description of each component. Norton Utilities Integrator. This is a short cut placed on your desktop and on your start bar. This is the launch pad for all of the Norton Utilities and it is where you can amend you settings, if you click on options you can select which utilities to run at start-up etc. ------------------------------------------- Find and Fix Problems, as it sounds this area lets you find and fix specific problems with your system. It includes a number of tools Norton System Check – This tool runs a complete system check, It scans your registry checking for obvious problems, it also validates all references to files on your computer if the file does not exist then it flags it up as a problem. It then runs a scan on your disk to check for disk integrity, fragmentation and space. It also looks to see the last time you used Norton Rescue to make a set of emergency boot disks and looks to see if there are any changes to your system that would require
the disks to be updated. At the end it gives you the option to repair any problems. If you are a novice this can sound confusing, it gives a technical description of the problem and if you want you can click on the details button and get even more information, but don’t get worried, there is a handy little button that says fix all this will let Norton go away and resolve the problems to the best of its ability. If you know more about computers you can select individual problems and resolve them and find out more information about what it is going to do. Be warned, if your emergency disks are not up to date (Or you haven’t done them) you will be asked for some floppy disks. Norton WinDoctor – This tool runs a cut down version of the system check. It runs the windows system check, again it scans the registry checking for obvious problems, it also validates all references to files on your computer if the file does not exist then it flags it up as a problem again giving the option to resolve them at the end. Norton Disk Doctor – This tool runs a disk check, it scans for the usual lost clusters, bad blocks etc and produces a report at the end detailing any problems. Again for the novices you can click a box that says automatically fix problems. Norton UnErase Wizard – This tool will attempt to recover files that you have deleted by mistake. There are no guarantees but it may just save your work. --------------------------------------------- The next section is Improve Performance; This suite of programs looks at your computer and tries to make it run even better. Speed Disk, this tool runs a form of defrag that tidies up your disk by defragmenting files and moving the most common used programs to the fastest areas of disk and relocates the less used files to the slower parts of the disk. Norton Optimization Wizard. This tool runs the above speed disk but also optimises t
he registry, this means that it scans the registry and tidies it up then moves it to the fastest part of the disk. It also optimises your PC swap file to give you the best performance with the available disk space, beware though this needs a reboot. --------------------------------------------- The third section is Preventative Maintenance – This suite of products has a number of useful goodies Norton System Doctor – This can be configured to constantly monitor your PC to keep an eye on things like CPU usage, Memory Usage, Disk space etc. The information is displayed on a small traffic light style display so you know when there are problems. It will also tell you which tool to run to fix the problems. Norton Wipe Info – This tool can perform several levels of delete. By default when you delete a file all that happens is the space is marked as available, if you use a low level disk tool you can still read the contents of the file that used to be there. Using this tool you can force new data to be written over the blank areas of disk so no one can read the data. You can use it to delete Files, Folders or to wipe your free space and you can run a standard wipe that runs through writing the value of your choice to the disk, or you can run a government wipe that’s runs through a number of times to make sure everything is deleted. Image – This tool saves a snapshot of important system files and disk layout so you can recover files in an emergency. Norton Registry Tracker – This tool can keep track of any changes to your registry, this can be useful if you are experiencing problems you can see what changes have been made to the system registry. --------------------------------------------- The forth section is Troubleshoot – This suite of tools contains advanced diagnostic utilities and information tools. Norton Diagnostics – This tool r
uns hardware checks, checking things like memory, Modem, Speaker, Sound Card, System Board Etc. This can alert you to problems with your hardware so you can call an Engineer to repair the fault. System Information – This tool displays all the information about your computer, for example System Information like your processor details, Memory details showing everything that is using memory at the time so you can see what is using the most. Drive information so you can analyse what is on the disk and how much room it takes as well as network and internet connection information. This tool can be very useful if you call a support line they will often ask you lots of questions about your computer, this is an easy way to have all the answers to hand. Norton Registry Editor – This tool allows you to edit the windows registry; it allows you to backup the registry before you start so you can restore it if you make a mistake. WARNING: YOU SHOULD NOT EDIT THE REGISTRY IF YIU DON’T KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING. IT CAN CAUSE YOUR COMPUTER TO STOP WORKING. Norton File Compare – This tool allows you to compare 2 files and it will highlight the differences, this is useful if you have 2 copies on a file, for example one on your hard disk and one on a floppy disk and you have made different changes to both of them, this tool would highlight the differences so your could correct them. --------------------------------------------- The product also comes with a few other useful add-ons Norton Crash Guard. This is a utility that you can set to run all the time in the background, if it detects an event that would usually cause Windows to crash then it steps in and warns you that there is a problem, this gives you time to save any open files before your machines crashes. It also takes a snapshot of the system to provide diagnostics if you need to contact a product supplier. Norton Web Services – T
his is a link to the Symantec www.nortonweb.com website. This allows you to make sure you have all the latest product updates on your PC, it will run a scan to identify the products you are using then it will search for available updates, for example if you are using Microsoft Office then it may let you know there is a service pack, or if you have a game installed there may be a patch available. With each available update there is a description so you know what the update does, a size and estimated download time so you know how long it will take and a link so you can download the file yourself. I have to admit, this looks exactly like the ZDNet site updates.com so I think Symantec must have passed this support over to them. There is also a Live Update utility that is used to keep your Norton products up to date, you can run this utility and it will connect to the Symantec web site and download any updates to Norton Utilities or any of its components. And you get a Live Advisor utility where you can register to receive messages from Symantec about product upgrades, problems, hints and tips etc. Then you load Live Advisor it checks to see if there are any new messages meeting your requirements and downloads them to your Live Advisor Inbox.
This has been one of the best things i have insatlled on my computer. Until i installed my system would always crash, which i hate, but since i've installed this software i have never had to reboot my computer again. This programme is easy to install and easy to use, everything is explained for you. Up until i first ran the problem finder, i thought i had kept my computer in pretty good condition, but no, this software found 106 errors and with a click of the mouse fixed them quickly. Now when a programme crashes i don't have to restart the programme or even my computer, with crashguard all i have to do is click the revive button and i'm back on track. A must have if you are sick of seeing "this programme has performed an illegal operation" or looking at a blue screen all the time.
Norton Utilities is billed as being the best utilities that you buy. In addition, will help you to maintain your PC and keep it in top condition. What a load of rubbish. We installed it on a machine at work for the disk doctor, as it is good at unmangling disk. It will unmangle about 95% unless they are really bad. That is the best bit of the whole package. From there, it goes down hill. The machine that is installed on has many files dumped on the hard disk and then removed again (I work on a IT helpdesk) But it runs like drains. The crash guard crashes the machine and does not help to stop it. It just seems to slow the machine down. In addition, if we could afford a machine just to Norton we would. But we are not made of money. It seems to keep going wrong and then does not work. We have to re-install it about 3 times in less than a year because it keeps going wrong. We re-installed and want to just put the disk doctor on we choose that and nothing else and then it went and installed the whole blinking thing. I would not recommend this. The price was about £30 a tad expensive just to unmangle your disk. I would choose freeware if you can find. And the major advantage is that if it is freeware you do not have to pay.
I thought I would try Nortons utilities to help my computer run more efficiently, only to find it did the exact opposite. The crash guard is basically useless. It tells you the computer is about to crash and then crashes, big help there. There's so many little useless programs running in the background using so much of your PC'c RAM, it makes the PC run sluggish. It also interfears with PC's Clocks causing problems there as well. So, in finishing, to take care of your PC, Don't use Norton Utilities.
Now like the majority of Norton software this is a highly useful program. Let me tell you now! the Zip Rescue is VERY useful it saved me over 7hrs of trying to get a PC to start at work (i had the PC booted in 10mins with this!). Also how can you survive without the crashguard help! wow this is useful, the amount of times that you will not crash with this when you would normally have crashed and been re-booting is amazing. You will be shocked to see how much help anti-freeze can be when you have a feeling that some program is near the point of crashing. Get this program! :-)
Being a novice computer user I was told to invest in a utility programme to help get me through. What an excellent piece of advice that was!! The utility that I chose was Norton, mainly because everyone seems to stock it and it was recomended by most shop assistants. I installed it on to my computer and it gives me total peace of mind. All I need to do is run a system check ( a simple three click task) every three or four days and follow the simple instructions to keep my PC running smoothly. As yet there has'nt been a problem it could'nt fix.
This is definately the one to have, it's a one stop piece of software to keep your system working well. The range of features is amazing, the toolbar can monitor many system resources, disk space, memory etc. These can be customised to suit your needs. I find the Windoctor the most usefull, this can hunt for and easily fix many windows problems such as invalid shortcuts, ini errors etc. When I last run it I was amazed to find it had tracked down 37 errors ! these were then fixed by the program. This sits in the background making it readily available when needed. The other main features cover trouble shooting and preventative maintenance. Whilst the speed disk is good to keep your hard drive running at top speed it does take so long to do. Coupled with Norton Antivirus this will give all round protection.
I have to say that upon installing this piece of software I found the consequent performance degradation of my system to be somewhat unacceptable. Not only did the installation ironically freeze during the installation of the crashguard module but upon performing a full system analysis it found several problems on my PC which, being a system admin, I knew damn well were false alarms. The norton antivirus program was most disappointing and caused my PC to freeze on several occasions. The irony of the performance guages meant that although it was warning my system resources were dangerously low, it was because I had the damn things running in the first place! This is not a worthwhile utility and you will find your system has more problems with it than without.
I'll give this product one really good thing going for it... It's got the Norton name badged on it. I'm sure you're saying... ho hum... yeah yeah, not Like Perter Norton could have sold out I suppose!?! And you're right, he may well have and put his name on the box for the dollar value. But I can tell you this. I've been using Norton tools in one form or another for over 10 years now, starting way back in the days of bad old DOS. (Yep kiddies, when this was the main OS and not a nightmare you had to endure when things went wrong in 95!) The products are renowned for being stable, and with good reason, they are. Check any other reviews and they'll say the same... I'm sure of it. ONE WORD OF WARNING! NT! If you've got it don't assume this baby will run perfectly first time around. It'll take a little poke and a prod but will do the job. As a matter of fact, this goes for all Norton/Symantec products. The product itself? Check the feature list, if it does what you need then trust the Norton name and go with the flow... sometimes the crowd mentality can be a good thing!
I recently installed Norton office 2000.It detected several errors on my computer and I agreed for it to fix them. i used the uninstaller and let it remove those applications which it advised were not needed. My computer behaved strangely after this. I lost my favourites in Explorer and could not use any other explorer tools. i eventually uninstalled and reinstalled explorer which sorted the problem. I found guard dog annoying. It constantly warned me that sites were trying to access my credit card detalils, and taking my personal details. Its constant barking drove me demented.I altered the settings to make it less sensitive but eventually turned it off. I am nervous about using the first aid again, and am now only using it as a virus checker.
This piece of software is the worlds number one package for system maintenance. You get so much in this which fixes many problems that you don't even know exist ony our computer. When I first ran this on my computer which has been around for a year now I found that it was full of 343 errors that I didn't know of whcih one day would probably of completely ruined my machine. I would recommend this to anyone who's anyone and businesses to. It's optimization tools give you a boost in performance as well as an improved replacement of Scandisk called Norton Diskdoctor. You will also find a whole host of other tools to tweak your system, fix your system and optimize your system as well as giving you tips on your system. Frequent updates also keep your set of tols up to date.
Norton have always had one major advantage with their Virus Scanners and Utility programs. That is, the name 'Norton' is famous. I've always been one for choosing fame over actual research and with the Norton products, I have never, ever, been dissapionted, they have always given me 110% of what I expected from them, and have always been better thatn any of the alternatives taht I have seen in use / used on a different computer. I highly recommend any Norton product, aside from Crashguard, which was about as helpful to me as a can of red paint would be to a fly.
A prize I recieved from the many competitions I have won. Been a old hand with norton utils I dceided on a custom install and just selected the components I wanted EG Speed disk. a typical install is also fine for the disk dotor images maker, ect. I use diffrent software for these all I wanted was the speed disk. After Installation usage was easy and much better using these utils than the ones that came with windows. Be a bit cautious when using the reg cleaner I found it would delete things like your configuration for your joystick it thought they were dead. The registry editor is cool and much better than Regedit. *** Never mess around with the registy unless you backup and know what your doing**** Overall a super piece of kit not to be messed around with by beginners. I especially like the speed disk
