      Advantages

      Disadvantages

This is a piece of software you can't go wrong with.

RocketDock is a free application capable of bringing comparative order to even the most chaotic of windows desktops. Released back in 2008, RocketDock is an application that allows users to group frequently used programs and shortcuts in a smoothly animated dock.

      Variety of Features
      - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
The greatest advantage of using RocketDock is that it is possible have a completely empty desktop without it being completely useless. After grouping whatever icons you want on the dock together (through a user friendly process of dragging and dropping), you can then set the dock to be hidden on a particular side of the screen. After fiddling with a few settings such as setting timers and the likes, you have yourself a powerful little tool which when you hover your mouse over a certain section of the screen will cause the dock to appear, allowing you access to your most used icons.

The website (http://rocketdock.com) allows users to download a wide variety of addons that do everything from converting files to simply sitting there and looking pretty. You can customise icons to your liking by either downloading alternatives from the website or by experimenting with whatever photo editing software you happen to have stored in the dock.

Another nice feature for Vista is that you can minimise running applications to the dock (such as videos) and can see a preview of that application running in the dock.

This free applications runs like a charm on most computers and offers almost unparalleled possibilities for desktop customisation.

      User Friendly:

RocketDock comes with easy-to-read documentation ensuring that you get the most out of your software. Even without reading this it is easy to run; placing icons on the dock involves little more than drag-and-drop whilst deleting them requires a simple right click. The program may prove beneficial to the partially sighted as it not only allows them to group frequently used icons in one place, but when you hover over an icon it magnifies it, making it easier to read.

Customisation requires a little more effort, but again it is well documented and I imagine that the kind of person requiring something other than the standard icons is perhaps one who knows how to go about changing them.

The software also supports numerous languages meaning that it is not just limited to English speakers.

      Installation and Update Possibilities:
      - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Installing the software is as simple as downloading it and running the exe. You are guided through a series of menus offering options standard to most program installations.

With regards to updating the program, there has been no official update in quite some time, but the program is so bug free as to not require one. Users can update their software themselves by way of downloading and installing apps which can be found on the program website.

      Reliability:
      - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
This software has failed on me once; following my computer being shut down incorrectly RocketDock was unable to load my icons and reset itself to the standard icons. This was easily fixed, but does bring the software's reliability into question.

On more than a few occasions it also fails to load at all or will close down unexpectedly. Sometimes this can be fixed by restarting the program, but on other occasions it will not start working until my computer restarts.

In conclusion, this is a piece of software you can't go wrong with. Because it is free and because the download is small it is certainly well worth trying. There are a few reliability issues here and there and a lack of updates from the software company, but given the advantages of having an organised desktop I would say that the pros outweigh the cons in this case.

        Just a plain old review.

Have you ever gotten so tired of all of those little icons filling up your desktop on your computer? Well here is a simple and customizable solution. RocketDock is a free software that doesn't take up alot of room, that is made for hiding your icons.

First, lets start at the beginning. Once you download the software, all you do is follow the instructions and set it up to a good starting point of what you want, pretty much all you can do at this point is select it be either at the top, bottom, left or right part of your screen, and if you want it to hide (be invisible until you put the mouse point at the very top of the screen [if you selected it to be at the top] or be visible.

Now you get to customize it. This feature makes this program so much better. At rocketdock.com, you can download icons for whatever program. For example, there are about 40 different icons you can select for your iTunes icon. Or you can make your own icon if you have Adobe Photoshop, or you are able to save a picture in PNG format.

Not only is this program for putting your icons out of the way, but there are little programs called docklets for it, like a clock for one that you can customize the hands or even the clock picture if you want. You can put one on that will shut down your computer, replace your task bar (the bar at the bottom of your screen) have a safely remove USB and quite a bit more. But one of my favorite docklets is the Stack Docklet. All this really does is you put a folder that has extra files in it, like your My Computer file, and when you click on it all the files inside will drop down showing you all the files in it. I know its kinda hard to explain, but there is a video on it on rocketdock.com.

The best way to see what this program can do, is to go to rocketdock.com. They have videos on what you can do. But the main thing is to get rid of all those pesky icons, and customize it to your personality or to go with a theme from your computer.

There is another program much like this called ObjectDock, some people prefer it, some don't. But if this sounds like a good program, you should check out both, but my personal opinion says this one is the better one.
