-*-*- What is Skype? -*-*-
Skype is a program that allows you to chat with other people, but it concentrated on the calling people more than the instant messaging but it does support that. So basically it’s a program that you can communicate to other people through a number of ways.
-*-*- What are the functions? -*-*-
Calling – This is the main bit that Skype concentrated on because its slogan is ‘The Whole world can talk for free’ and that is correct to a certain extent. To be able to call someone you need two things a microphone and speakers (and of course all the drivers needed.) Oh yes, and you need the internet but I would of thought that was obvious. All you do is go onto the Skype website and download the program and install it. You then have to create an account like msn but its Skype name and a password and your away. You get a screen once you have signed in like msn with your contact list and all you have to do is add people that you want to talk to and you’re away. One other feature that is in the calling part of it is that you can have a video conversation if you both have webcam’s and microphones. Very handy when you are playing online games against each other.
Chatting – It’s also like msn in the sense that you can chat and you can use the normal features you know like send a file to your recipients, and invite other people into that conversation etc. But one of the best parts of the Skype chat is that the emocons are a lot better than the msn ones because they are animated and actually move and this can add a nice touch to your chat. Another part of the chat that I think is quite good is that you can change the topic of the chat, completely useless feature but sometimes come in handy.
Conference – If you are popular and have a lot of people on Skype you can have one big telephone call with them all (seen as how i'm not very popular I haven’t got that many contacts I have never actually had a conference but I have been invited to one.)
Search Feature – To add someone you can add them this way by the search feature. If you just want a chat with someone random you use this and enter the appropriate criteria. Like whether you want to talk to a male or a female, their age etc. Once you have found a person that you would like to communicate with then you send them an invitation saying something like ‘Please let me be in your contact list’ and if you want to communicate with them they accept if not then you simply decline.
Skype Me – Like MSN you can change your setting to on the phone, out to lunch, busy and you can do all that with Skype but there is one extra option called Skype Me and this is if you want to look for friends but cant be bothered searching for them. They will come to you. And how they know you are on Skype Me mode is because there is a checkbox in the search feature that says ‘Search for people with Skype Me.’
Credit – On Skype you can call anyone for free if they are on Skype and this is where the certain extent comes in, you can ring mobile phones and landlines off Skype but you have to purchase something called Skype credit and this will allow you to call anything and this is where the makers of Skype get all of their money from. And I can safely say that the Skype credit is a rip-off at 50p per minute to any phone. Now if you’re going to call your next door neighbour then this is a real scam but I suppose that it’s not bad if you are going to call a long distance call. But I have never used Skype credit and so I can’t tell you whether it is a scam or not but at 50p per minute I think it is.
-*-*- Other Stuff -*-*-
I have explained mostly about Skype now but there are a few little extra features like an event log, say if you missed your call it will say you have one missed call from Joe Bloggs he called at such-and-such a time. You do have the option to change your ringing tone and stuff like that and finally you can make a profile this will tell everyone about you. And so if they wish to contact you, they see stuff about you.
-*-*- Problems with Skype -*-*-
Skype is a good program if you like to talk but I suppose it can be a little bit exposed if young children are calling anyone that they want to. But apart from that that’s the only thing that I can possibly suggest that’s bad about Skype.
-*-*- Conclusion -*-*-
And so to sum up class, Skype is a very good program and if you have a microphone and some speakers then I recommend that you just give it a try, it can be fun when you call Australians when they lost the ashes.
I would give this program a **** (four astrix) no four stars.
I hope that you have enjoyed reading this review
