--- Floppy disk file “spanning” using Winzip.
O.K. If you already know about this one, it may still be of use. On the other hand, if you don’t know - then read on...
Winzip is an excellent utility for compressing large files and saving space, but, it’s a hard fact of life that a floppy disk will only hold 1.44 Megabytes of data, whether in compressed, or uncompressed form.
I had been using Winzip for 2 Years, before a 'wise' tutor at college told me about the facility in Winzip to create Zipped files that “span”, or 'go across' multiple floppy disks.
This is useful if the files you are working with will not fit on one floppy disk and you need to transfer them on-to another PC.
For instance, you may have a document which has many bitmaps or jpegs in it, and the document may be say 18 Mb in size or even - much larger, even when compressed.
This is where floppy “spanning” is used.
The safe way to do it is to have a number of pre-formatted blank floppy’s which you can trust.
If there are any “bad” sectors on any of the floppy’s then it won’t work.
You will just get a Bad CRC error message.
To make a Zip file that spans multiple disks, simply create a Zip file on the first floppy disk, then add files to the Zip as you normally would.
If the disk fills up during the “Add” operation, you will be then be prompted for another disk. Simply insert the next disk and click the OK button.
To Zip the files in your c:\bigfiles folder to a zip file called... A:\bigfile.zip:
First --- Start WinZip.
Next --- Drag and drop the c:\bigfiles folder from My Computer or the Windows Explorer to the WinZip window.
Then--- In the Dropdown dialog box, type the filename of the Zip file you want to create. (A:\bigfile.zip). --for exa
Finally- Click the "Add" button and the files, or that very large file will be 'spanned' across your multiple floppy’s.
If more than one disk is needed, you will be prompted for additional disks as required.
You can also select the option to format the additional disks if they have data on them.
When you take your ‘spanned’ disks to the ‘remote’ computer - you will be prompted to insert the 'last' disk of the set - and then continue on to the ‘first’ disk. Winzip will then unzip all of the compressed data on your floppys on-to your other PC for you.
