Advantages: Cheaper gas, You read your own meter!
Disadvantages: Need to be online to get the cheapest rates on offer.
If you want to make HUGE savings on your electric and gas bills, you need to do your homework... go to one of the utility savings calculator websites such as 'buy.co.uk', or 'uswitch.com' and you will find that big savings can be made by switching your current suppliers. I chose to switch from British Gas to Amerada's online tarriffs. The tarrifs vary by postcode but I am currently paying 1.1991p/per kwH and a standing charge of £28.36. It is cheaper to use the online service and to pay by direct debit. I can't remember exactly but I think the calculator showed that by switching to Amerada Online i could save up to 20% on my gas bills. The switch was surprisingly easy. You can initiate the switch from the utlity savings websites mentioned above. I received a confirmation email from Amerada saying they would be sending me a cancellation form. I received this a few days later. You simply sign and return back to Amerada. Amerada then request a transfer date. Most suppliers need 28 days notice. After the switch has been made Amerada sent me an email requesting a final meter reading. This reading is sent to the previous suppliers who send out a final statemet. That's it... the next thing you receive is a Meter Request email. You type in your reading, send it off to Amerada who send back a statement. I am paying by direct debit - also set up online - so no need to do anything. You can monitor the transfer process and account status online on their easy-to-use website once you are given password details. Amerada are also the cheapest dual fuel suppliers (based on a consumer spend of 3300 kwH electric and 190505 kwH gas) irrespective of payment method. If you are thinking of changing suppliers, go to one of the websites mentioned above to calculate your actual savings based on your currrent bill, postcode, payment method. Remember that 'dual fuel' option is not always the chea
pest option. Yesterday I changed my electric suppliers from Seeboard to Atlantic Electric and Gas who are the cheapest option for me. I am hoping that the change will be as smooth as the transfer to Amerada online.
