A few months ago, I purchased my house and connected to London electricity. Then I had to go away for 1 month on a business trip. When I came back I had a pile of mail one of which was from british gas saying they can beat London eletricity on price and if I dont reply within two weeks, they will assume I will want to switch to them!. another one from them said "Thankyou for choosing British gas as your supplier" !. Well with some many things to sort out in my new home, I just couldn't be bothered to make a big deal of it. Then my boiler broke down I took me 4 weeks to get a new one installed. I got it installed from another company because british gas quoted twice the price. What really upset me was when I recieve the gas bill after 3 months for £460. I only live on my own and was away most of the time and my boiler wasn't even working for another month!. I called up and they said it was only an estimate as I hadn't provide the meter reading when I first arrived ( they never asked for one). The bill had no metion of an estimate anyhere but they assured me if I gave them the current meter reading they would correct the figure. so I did and next came a bill for £250 ! I calculated I only used £12 worth in the last month so 3 months you would think would be around £40 at most. I think their formula for estimating is think of a number and multiply by 100! fortunately I found a bill for the previous owner with the final meter reading when he left so eventually got the correct bill for £45 Now I have swiched to servista, haven't got my bill yet but sure it will be cheaper. so be warned - remember to read your meter when you move in and avoid British gas at all costs!

- 19/03/03 Surely common sense dictates you should check gas & electric meter readings when you move into & out of a house. From what I have read I'd guess British Gas did not come to read the meter is because no-one asked them to!!! |

- 11/01/02 I have exactly the same problem at my new house, they sent me a bill for £75 which was estimated, but was much much higher than what it actually was! Trying to sort it out now by them agreeing a starting price with the old co, ignore the bills that come in they say, well no they are threatening me with disconnection and they still cant agree a starting price?
Why the bl**dy hell dont they just come round and read the meter! |
