Advantages: None
Disadvantages: Honest in name only
British Gas use a sales method that relies on the 'regime of truth' technique. They will send an engineer to give your boiler a 'free' inspection. Upon condemning it as unrepairable they will offer you a special deal on a replacement boiler. British Gas will take advantage of their unique position in the marketplace as the major gas supplier in the UK by coming into your home wearing the badge that tells you they are the authority on all matters relating to gas and gas appliances. The authority is generally assumed to be trustworthy and people generally accept their diagnosis as truth. To give you an example of their barefaced deception we nearly purchased a brand new boiler from British Gas back in February this year until we discovered from another engineer that we only needed a new fuse. We were completely taken in by the 'regime of truth'. British Gas offered us an insulting £100 apology which was refused as I continue to broadcast in every quarter their dubious practises. It is alarming to think how many serviceable boilers may end up in the skip every day if our experience is anything to go by. Full transcripts between myself and British Gas have been sent to BBC Watchdog without a reply and are available to anyone who asks. Buyers BEWARE!

- 10/12/02 They tried to do the same thing to me "your boiler is unsafe" "cannot be fixed" after providing me with over a £3000 quote I told them where to go - funnily enough I got my boiler fixed for about £150!

- 10/12/02 Aren't their engineers on commission?
They obviously havena improved. In 1981, our boiler broke down. They came and identified the thermocouple required (which i had already told them about on the phone). They took two weeks to come back. By this time I had cleaned up the old thermocouple and the boiler was working again. They went APESHIT when I told them I had 'fixed' the boiler. |
