Advantages: NONE

Disadvantages: Time wasting, Sloppy work, Lying to get customers

I recently had the pleasure of moving house. Unfortunately for me the gas and electricity meters had been removed from the new house as it had stood empty for over two years and that was when my nightmare began.

In my previous home I had been a British Gas Dual Fuel customer. When I moved however I had to have the meter's reinstalled by the companies who had removed them, in this case British Gas for the Gas and Scottish Power for the Electricity and I was informed that I had to be a Scottish Power customer for 28 days before I could change my supplier.

When the 28 days were up I duly contacted British Gas to have my electricty supplied by them again and was assured on the telephone that it would be a simple process that would take a matter of a few weeks to complete. This was the beginning of May.

I had a lovely little card from British Gas asking me to supply the meter reading and supplier number from Scottish Power and again assuring me that changing over would be a simple process. I checked that all my details were correct, TWICE, and then sent off my details in the post.

A few days later I had a lovely welcoming call from British Gas proclaiming how happy they were to have me as a dual fuel customer. At this point they again confirmed that all the address and phone number details were correct.

My electricity account was due to change on the 20th May 2003. A week later I phoned Scottish Power and asked for my final bill to be sent to me. I saw that the reading that was shown on the bill was different from the one that I had sent to British Gas and so I phoned the automated service and ammended it.

When I received the ammended bill I was surprised to see that I was still being charged for them supplying my electricity and quite angrily phoned to see what was going on. I can say that I was not too happy when I was told by Scottish Power that they had not been informed of any changeover.

Immed
iately I phoned British Gas to see what had gone wrong. On confirming my address they said that they had spotted the problem. They had not changed my electricity account over at number 16, but actually had changed my neighbour's electricty account at number 15. This was after my confirming that my house number was 16 TWICE!!!

I was then told it would be a further 6 weeks to complete the transfer as they had to ammend all the details. At that point I told them to forget it and I changed my Gas and Electricity to NPower.

And that is that; or so I thought until I was taking my rubbish out to the wheelie bin and I heard a canvasser from British Gas was telling my neighbours that NPower were going out of business and the government were recommending that all NPower customers change to British Gas. As I have a relative working for NPower down In England I was surprised and asked him about this and guess what; its a total lie. NPower have been informed about this from me.

So British Gas have gone down in my estimations and I would not reccommend them as a company to anyone. Be Warned!!!!!!!!
