Disadvantages: aaaaaaarrrrrrrgggggggghhh hhhh too many

I wonder how many people are like me? Sitting at home, enjoying a nice cup of tea when there is a knock at the door and I cringe. Before I even get close to the front door I am filled with a fear knowing that I am going to be subjected to a barraging from the person on the other side.

The offender is not a baliff, or social worker, but the next in a long line of "Service Providers".

It is becoming impossible to get away from the companies who come to the door, cold calling to try and get you to sign up to their energy supplier, and you can argue all you like, but the particular supplier that day will try to persuade you that their company will charge you less, but you have to sign up there and then.

Its driving me bananas, I am becoming paranoid that they line up around the corner and come one after another.

The callers are also the most rude people in this world, they treat you like a moron, try to convince you that they know you better than you do, and make out that you are incapable of making an informed decision.

The laughable side is that when you have a problem, you can bet your life that it will take you forever to get through to someone who can help you, and even longer to get someone out to help you.

Service on your doorstep!!!! I don't think so!

Yepp, they drive me mad too - my opening gambit is to show them two year's gas and electricity readings and ask them to come back when they can show me from my own figures that they will be cheaper. That usually does the trick. You can always use www.uswitch.com to see who would be cheapest for you, and actually approach THEM - now there's a novelty!

People in general who try and sell you things on your doorstep are a pain. Myself and my husband actually made it to Sainsbury's after work one day (and we didn't row which is a bit of a feat if you've spent 8 hours at work and another 2 shopping!) and as we were opening our front door, this man came running up to us and started to try and sell us double glazing. This was so wrong in so many ways as he had obviously been waiting and it was 7 o clock in the evening, we both had arms full of shopping and to top it all off the WHOLE of my house is double glazed, we have UPVC doors and we already have a conservatory. SHEESH talk about pick the wrong time/wrong people! During the 2 minutes silence for the Queen Mother the other day the electricity man banged on my door for the duration - just to take the reading! I think they breed these people somewhere secluded, so you can't really blame them for not integrating successfully into society!

SO, how DO you choose? Is there a best one? Yes, many salesmen are pushy, but they used to use far more underhand tactics than just that! Watchdog in 1997/98 was pretty much on Gas companies and their salesmen. They even had a league table of complaints.
