Advantages: Its a free service, YOU CAN SAVE MONEY
Disadvantages: It can take up to 10 minutes of yout time to find out !!
I thought that that would grab your attention. uswitch.com is a website that is completely free to use, and is designed to help save you money. And it can work too! And its free to use! And its not full of annoying pop-up adverts or banners, and neither do they sell your email address on to porn sites etc etc. WHAT IS IT ??? www.uswitch.com, put simply is a website that will trawl through all the available utility companies that supply in your area and tell you what the cheapest option is for you. Its been a while since I followed the advice of uswitch.com, because every time I've checked back, I've found that I am still with the cheapest supplier for my gas and electricity. I independantly checked out the results that uswitch.com supplied, but contacting the top 5 companies when I first used their service, and uswitch was right. All their info was correct and up to dat. And its free. (Think I've made that point well enough now.) LAYOUT AND EASE OF USE When you enter the url, the homepage will finally load (after some press quotes are displayed) to give you a choice of comparing your: a) gas and electricity costs; b) Home telephone costs and c) Digital TV costs. I haven't ever used the site for TV or phone, because I am happy with my current arrangements for these. However I did use the site for gas and electricity. Anyway click on what you are interested in saving money on - eg gas and electricity. Its not the fastest website to load up, but its easy to use. Firstly you need to enter your postcode - and that is because the site has to check who currently supplies to your area. Then for both gas and electricity, you are asked to enter your current supplier, how you currently pay (eg fixed monthly direct debit, token meter etc), and finally what the company calls the payment plan you are on (eg energy online) (NOTE the screen will reload when you have ch
osen a supplier and entered how you pay.) Anyway, basically then you enter either your monthly payment or annual useage, and the clever website tells you what your current payments are and lists the top 5 companies, rated on price, service etc. USEFULLNESS If you haven't used this service at all, then it may well be able to show you that you could make savings. When I first used this service, I was able to immediately save something like £10 or so a month by switching suppliers. Now I check every year or so, just to make sure that I still have the best deal available. I don't have any customer loyality - the cheapest utilities is the best for me. The site is really easy to use, I have never had to contact anyone who maintains it, so I don't know what their service to visitors is like, but its a site that is very much worth a visit. It can take around 5 - 10 mins to see what savings can be made, but surely, if it means you make real month on month savings on utility bills, it has to be worth that. Highly reccommended site. Thanks for reading. Comments are, as always, very welcome. Andy.

- 08/01/03 A good and useful review, very helpful indeed!
About 6 months ago I switched from British Gas to Virgin Energy and British Gas couldn't believe Virgin were cheaper until I quoted them the unit prices!
If I had known about this site earlier I might have saved myself more money! |
