Advantages: Online account access, reasonable customer service, prices not the most expensive
Disadvantages: none so far
I have been with EDF energy for about 5 months. Upon buying my flat I switched from Eon to EDF as based on my estimates of usage they would be cheaper. So far I have been pleasantly suprised.
My flat is all electric so I had been quite worried about bills especially in the winter as my only source of heat is from a 3kw portable convector heater. I had heard these were notoriously expensive to run.
EDF put me on their Online 6 tarrif which is one of their cheapest tarrifs. Everything is done online and you can also collect Nectar points too. I have collected 500 (enough for a £5 argos voucher or half way towards a cinema ticket) in the last quarter. Not loads you might say but better than getting nothing!
I pay by direct debit and at a fixed rate of £29 a month. I was worried that this estimate was quite low and that they had based this on the fact my property is a studio flat and that they were not aware I didn't have gas central heating and that in a few months when they reviewed they would whack it up to something much much higher.
However, there is an option to input online a reading anytime you want so that you can see how much you are in credit or in debit based on your fixed monthly payments. They also come round and read the meter every quarter. I just had my first meter reading done by them and have discovered I am only about £60 in debit to them. As this quarter was over the winter months when the lighting and heating was in much more constant use I hope that during the summer this will even out and over the year my costs will just be the standard £29 a month they are charging.
They charge about 9p per unit for the first certain amount of electricity per day (can't remember how much) and then about 14p per unit there after. I have compared to a few other tarrifs and for me it really does seem to be working out as one of the cheapest.
You can also get discounts for dual fuel (which i don't have).
In terms of customer service I have only had to ring them twice to clarify various different things and both times they were very helpful and the phone was answered pretty quickly.
I don't ever expect amazing customer service or anything out of the ordinary from utility companies and so just the fact that everything so far seems to be in working order and I have had no problems, they manage to answer their phone in a reasonable time and the prices are not completely astronomical means I plan to stay with them for a while longer.
