If you've never had to buy your gas on a pre-payment meter then you probably wouldn't know this, but most gas companies charge more for using pre-payment meters. Hmmm, now let's think about this - people using pre-payment meters do so, because their incomes are such that they can't guarantee that they'll be able to pay the bill at the end of the month. They need to pay up front to avoid being cut off for non-payment. So the people on the lowest incomes get to pay most for their gas, while people who can afford to pay by direct debit often pay less than everyone else - that's not really fair is it?
