Advantages: cheaper for everyone
Disadvantages: not everyone knows about it
If you've never had to buy your gas on a pre-payment meter then you probably wouldn't know this, but most gas companies charge more for using pre-payment meters. Hmmm, now let's think about this - people using pre-payment meters do so, because their incomes are such that they can't guarantee that they'll be able to pay the bill at the end of the month. They need to pay up front to avoid being cut off for non-payment. So the people on the lowest incomes get to pay most for their gas, while people who can afford to pay by direct debit often pay less than everyone else - that's not really fair is it? It's great if you are the one paying by direct debit, but not so great if you aren't. Equigas charges everyone the same. There is no standing charge, so everyone just pays for the gas they use and everyone benifits from lowest possible prices, not only those paying by direct debit. Equigas is a fair trade,non-profit making company, so any profit made doesn't go to share holders or directors - it goes into making the price of your gas cheaper! Not bad huh! If you want to find out if it will save you money, then you can visit the equigas website where there is a handy calculator. You type in the amount of gas used on your last bill and it will calculate how much equigas would have charged you. Equigas charge 1.574p per kwh used. Changing to equigas benefits the whole community, because those paying on a pre-payment meter will pay less too.

- 06/12/02 You're a fountain of knowledge about all things social. I've a funny feeling there's a Tony Benn trapped inside you somewhere wanting to get out! Really good to hear of these things. I've already signed to the Phone Co-op after your opinion, and it looks as if I'm about to do it again. Any other things like this I should know about?? |

- 21/10/01 I've often thought that it was inequitable that people who had difficulty paying for their gas had to pay more. It's particularly difficult for OAP's and probably actually leads to hypothermia! Sue :) |

- 20/10/01 I will also take a look into this. It's disgusting that the poorer you are the more you pay! |
