Advantages: Fine when they are supplying your power.

Disadvantages: Incompetant customer service.

I have read with interest a few reviews on Powergen and have taken some comfort in learning that I am not the only one who has had problems with them.

I moved into a new house on a new estate 3 years ago and was informed that Powergen were supplying both electricity and gas to the premises. They were the builders chosen company, so for ease I decided to let them continue with the supply. I signed the contracts and awaited my first bill. This came in due course but was only for the electricity. I waited a few months for a gas bill but one did not arrive. I decided to contact Powergen to find out what was happening. They told me that they only supplied electric to the premises and not gas. I then contacted the builders who confirmed that they were supplying both. Enqs with my neighbours confirmed that the rest of the street was getting both gas and electric from Powergen. So, back to them. Again they denied any knowledge of the supply. I had got a full gas supply to the premises that someone was obviously supplying to me, and I was quite happy to pay for this supply. I then asked powergen if they could take on the supply to the house to keep things easy. They stated that they would do this but needed a meter point reference number. "Where do I get this?" I asked. "From your supplier" they replied. "But who is my supplier?" They could not tell me. They told me to contact Transco who were just as bad and tried to refer me back to Powergen!! The problem was eventually solved when a rep from Npower called at my house by chance offering to supply both gas and electric. I informed him of what had happened and within a few weeks I was signed up and supplied both gas and electric by Npower with no further problems.

I do understand that no single person at Powergen is responsible for this but I do think that had someone from one of my numerous calls to them taken a little time and effort then I would not have needed to transfer in the first place. It was obviously not a difficult problem to solve as Npower did it in a matter of weeks.

Summary: Did not seem to take any interest or time to sort out my problem.

Did any of your neighbours seem to have similar problems with Powergen? If the whole new set of houses were connected at the same time by the same people, it seems very odd if it was only you with this problem.

As someone who has worked for two different suppliers (neither being Powergen), I can say that the problem you describe is all too common across most suppliers. The procedure for getting a new property on supply involves several parties and it seems communication always breaks down somewhere.

Tha ts no excuse for the service given by the suppliers when things go wrong, but I would like to stress its not just powergen.

Yeah, Powergen are pretty awful!

I'd have liked to have read more about the services they provide, prices etc...
