Advantages: cheaper than other biggies
Disadvantages: bad customer services, lazy, greedy
I am totally dissatisfied with the Powergen service.
Firstly, its not like their serivice is something out of the ordinary. They provided gas and electricity and other resources, and there aren't many ways in which you can rendr that exciting.
I previously used to have my electricity provided by a company called TXU Energi and my gas provided by Amerada gas. These two companies were not as massive as Powergen yet they still provided the cheapest resources in my area. Everything was going fine, their customer services was always kind, helpful, spot on and human. Then the giants Powergen moved in and everything went bad.
Powergen, in a short space of time within 2003-2004, bought both companies. They automatically switched both my accounts to theirs "hassle-free". This is supposed to be good, but the only way I found out was thanks to my old suppliers who informed me of the take over and to expect a letter informing me of my position, my bills and my rates from Powergen. Did that letter ever come...NO!!!
I had to personally phone powergen and speak to their ever so kind computer, having to input via my telephone thousands and thousands of numbers and alas, after hours of phone time I discovered my customer reference numbers for gas and electricity.
The prices of Powergen weren't that more expensive than my previous suppliers, but they were MORE expensive, and excuse me if I'm wrong, but shouldn't the trend for bigger companies with bigger profits and a bigger customer base be to have lower prices? As if that wasn't good enough, a couple of months later I promptly received a letter informing me of rate changes and that the prices were being furtherly increased.
Admittedly Powergen is still probably more convenient in terms of price than the other biggies in the industry, but if you look locally for suppliers, there are still better prices out there.
Anyway, I had a life to ge
t on with and let be. I wasn't being charged over the top and I thought everything had been settled with all the documentation and customer reference numbers and all the other hassle which accompanies company take overs and gas & electricity supply switching. 3 months later I was harshly brought back to bad customer services reality.
I was being billed for my gas and electricity separately...how could this be? I thought Powergen prided themselves in always providing you with the cheaspest solution for your needs. So here I am at home, having gas and electricity being supplied by the same company, yet I am having to pay standing charges and tax on seperate biills for the same company, yet I could of had the two bills merged into one saving me quite a big lump sum of money.
I promptly e-mailed Powergen and explained the situation to them. They quickly replied and said they did not recognise my customer reference numbers (yet they recognise them when accepting my direct debit). I phoned them up and expected an explanation and for the situation to be amended. They gave me an explanation saying that since the take over the systems between the previous companies and Powergen were not compatible so at the time they would be unable to merge the accounts into a single one, (and therefore they are forced to charge me more and make as much prfoit as possible). They did say however that they would inform me when the merging would be possible. To date they still haven't informed me, and every time I phone, they still don't know. ( this being written in April 2004). So 14 months after taking a company over they are still unable to recognise my customer reference number for enquiries, and merge two bills into one, and update their systems for compatibility for all of their services....so where exactly is my money going?
