At the time of writing this review for Scottish Power I am patiently sitting by the phone waiting for their complaints dept to phone me back (doesn't bode well for the review does it!!!).
Since moving into our home 3 years ago we have been with Scottish Power and up until the start of this year had no problems with them whatsoever.
Their prices always seemed to be amonst the lowest of the leading gas and electricity competitors and their customer service had never been a problem, oh how things change!
At the start of the year I received what can only be described as a horrendous gas and electricity bill - £276.00 for a months worth!! Now I only live in a 3 bed house with 3 people in it so you can imagine the shock receiving the bill on my doorstep, but in all credit to Scottish Power they did sort it out for me rather promptly.
Last month I received an email from them saying they were putting up my monthly direct debit by £20.00 to £115.00 a month even though their prices had dropped over recent months and so had my consumption (I turned into a gas and electricity saving freak after receving the last bill using no appliance whatsoever that didn't need using - I was like a money saving monster lol!!!). Scottish Power refused to budge so after discussing the situation with my partner we decided to have pre-payment meters for both units installed so we could keep a closer check on our usage and he would also be able to help me out more with topping the cards up financially!!
All sounds so easy doesn't it - wrong!!!!
After waiting 3 weeks for our allocated slot 10th July 2009 finally arrived and having booked they day off from work (with no pay) I sat patiently and waited and waited for my men to arrive - then I waited some more!!
We were given a time slot of between 12-6pm and by 5.55pm I decided they weren't going to turn up so rang Scottish Power to check on the whereabouts of my meter. I was told (after waiting 3 minutes to get through their automated security screening) to phone back later as they may just be running late. This I did and I was told we were still on the list to be done that day they were just running late (this was another 15 minute phone call!).
Surprise, surprise no one showed up that night so I got back on the phone to Scottish Power Saturday morning. After being on hold for 4 minutes the kind gentleman cut me off & didn't bother to phone me back - the cheek of it. So off I trotted to my computer and took my frustrations out on a snotty email to them - how difficult is it to get an answer from these people!!!
Heard nothing all weekend so tried again Monday morning. The best I got was 'sorry i'll book you in for our next available slot 3rd August!!). The poor woman on the end of the phone will rue the day she ever answered my call and registered my complaint but as the complaints dept are so busy (lol) they are going to have to phone me back to get the details.
That was 3 hours ago and im still sat patiently waiting for my call - that complaints dept must be horrendously busy!
Ok rant over - I wasn't asking for much but a bit of good helpful customer service. I received no communication whatsoever from Scottish Power stating they wouldn't be able to get to me that day and booking me in for their next slot in 3 weeks time is hardly rectifying my problem when it was indeed their fault that I was let down Friday.
I have lost all faith in Scottish Powers customer relations now so im off to British Gas - probably won't have much look there either but it can't be any worse than Scottish Power now can it!
Summary: Avoid at all costs!!

- 13/07/09 I am with Southern Electric after dreadful stints with SPower and BGas.
Southern electric have always changed my monthly debit at my request without much fuss. I have now managed to get my electricity bill down from £10 a week (with a prepayment meter) to £7 a month (with a normal quarterly meter).
I would AVOID British Gas at all costs - they were an absolute nightmare - and do not get a prepayment meter installed - it is by far the most expensive way to pay for your electricity consumption. |
