I've been with Severn Trent for over 2 years now, and always paid around £20 by direct debit per month. At the end of the quarterly or six month billing period, I only had a small amount extra to pay and I was happy with the service. Until... A couple of weeks ago I received a letter from them saying they were going to start charging me £70 a month direct debit! My amount more than tripled! Severn Trent Water is one of ten privatised water companies supplying water in the UK. It was was the Water Act of 1973 which created Severn Trent from the amalgamation of at least 25 publc authorities incuding Birmingham and Nottingham water boards. It supplies water to 8 million plus people and is regulated by OFWAT. In 2005, it was ordered to repay £4m back to customers for over-charging. Severn Trent supply water to my home area. They are also responsible for sewage and rainwater collection. I am pleased to be able to say that I only ever hear from them at bill time. I pay the bill by direct debit and so can’t remember the last time I actually spoke to a Severn Trent employee. Clear water comes out of my taps when I turn them on and so frankly I don’t feel the need to chat. The only time I encounter any problems is when they dig up the road, and as they assure me that this is to install better piping to ensure cleaner water and less leakage and therefore a better environment I really have no complaints.
