Advantages: save money

Disadvantages: baby ups the price :(

What is it about water that makes it so expensive? Doesn't it just fall from the sky? Why the hell am I paying £58 a month for it then? OK, I am being a tad sarcastic here, but it really does annoy me how the whole water service system works. Let me explain:

When I moved into my rented house, the water bill was something like £70 a month. I was told that I could get a meter fitted and it would be cheaper, so there's tip number one: if you don't have a water meter fitted, you can probably save money, so contact your water provider and ask them to fit one.

The lady on the phone said they couldn't fit one at my house, due to poor access. At this point, she was about to say bye bye when we remembered a tip we had been given - if they can't fit a meter, and it's their fault, then you can demand to have reduced rates. We mentioned this, and the woman reluctantly told us we may qualify, and we needed to fill in some paperwork. The paperwork arrived, and I was horrified to see that the price was around £40 for two people, £58 for 3. In the small-print, it turned out my one year old son was enough to put us into the 'three people' category, so there's tip number two: if you're pregnant, do it quick, whilst it's cheaper.

The bill explained the cost, breaking it down to water and sewerage, which I guess are two things I can't live without; I just feel annoyed that a) it's not my fault they can't fit a meter here, and b) my one year old son should not up the price to three 'users'.

IN CONCLUSION:
Act now, get a meter fitted or (if you can't get one) demand cheaper water costs.

Summary: do it
