Advantages: It helps us to live

Disadvantages: It's bloody expensive!

(Does anyone else remember that hymn?)

When I moved into our rented house we had to sort out our water rates. It was all sorted after a few weeks and we were getting billed regularly for around £70. It wasn't until one of my family members suggested that it might work out cheaper with a water meter, that I decided to look into it. Notice how the woman on the phone never mentioned that to me when I was sorting out my bills with her!

After spending around ten minutes waiting to speak to someone, the people on the phone told me that I could apply for a water meter which I did. They send me a pack through the post which was very easy to comlete and I eagerly awaited the outcome. It turned out that they couldn't fit one on the property due to the access of the house. They did however explain that we could qualify for reduced rates because of this. I had to ring up again and get another pack sent out so I could apply for the reduced rates. In the mean time the months are going by and we are still paying the £70 which was very annoying!

Eventually we got the forms through but it turned out that we would have been charged around £30 less if it was just Andrew and I living in the house but because we had Noah who, I might add was just one at the time, they were going to charge us as if he was the third person. This really 'got my goat'! How could they say that Noah was the third person? He hardly used up any water and he pooed in his nappies so he didn't contribute to any of the sewerage costs! Anyway it was what it was and we ended up making a saving of around £15 in the end.

However this review sounds I am extremely great ful for the water services in our area but I begrudge the fact that the people on the phone won't outwardly tell you ways of making a saving so my three tips are:

1) Ask, Ask and Ask.
When you move into your new home ring then waterboard up and ask them for ways you can save money because they sure as hell won't tell you.

2) If there are two of you but soon to be three then get it sorted soon or you end up having to pay for that tiny newborn that takes up a raindrop of water every three days!

3) See if you can get a water meter installed on the property and if not then ask for reduced rates.

Summary: Should I really have to pay extra for a baby?
