Dyson Mattress Tool
by pink_glitter
I have a Dyson DC25 vacuum cleaner and although I'm happy with it, I find that the upholstery tool is rather small for my needs. My sofa is made from a textured fabric (sort of like a thick corduroy type effect) and I find that it needs to be vacuumed thoroughly every couple of days to keep it looking in nice condition. As the upholstery ... tool is on the small side it was taking me absolutely ages to go over the whole sofa, so I looked online to see if I could find something larger.
Although this tool is designed for mattresses I thought it would be ideal. Of course I do actually vacuum my mattress as well to get rid of dust mites, so for me this would serve two purposes. The price did put me off buying it at first, but a few months ago I noticed it had been reduced a huge amount on Amazon, so snapped one up while they were still cheap!
The mattress tool is a silvery grey in colour and has the Dyson logo on the front. It came in a black, cardboard box which is much larger than the item itself. The mattress tool is made from dark grey plastic and is similar in appearance to the standard upholstery tool which I believe is included with most Dyson models. The mattress tool just clips onto the hose, but you do get a small piece of plastic which is like an extension - I believe this is for older models, which have a different connector. It seems well made, the plastic is very sturdy and I can't imagine it would break very easily.
There's not a huge amount I can say about this product, but since purchasing it, I have noticed that it has cut my cleaning time down considerably - especially when vacuuming the sofa. When we moved to our house I had to use the standard upholstery tool to clean the stairs (the mattress tool was lost in a box somewhere at the time) and I was on ages doing the whole lot. This tool makes the job so much easier. The suction from the vacuum cleaner is just as strong even though this tool is quite wide and I've had no problems with it picking up. I should note, that it also has a velvet strip on the underside which catches any hairs or fluff well.
The only real negative about this product is the price. On Amazon at the moment it is £11.99 which is a lot for a piece of moulded plastic. I've seen it at even higher prices than this too - Currys for example are charging £15.99. Looking back through my order history I can see I paid £5.95, but that is the one and only time I've seen the price that low. It is worth checking often though to get a good deal.
Overall, if you have a Dyson and you have large areas of upholstery which you need to vacuum, or are sick of vacuuming the mattress with a tiny upholstery tool, then this is a product worth having.

Miele SF-AAC 50 Active Air Clean Filter
by SusanLesley
A couple of weeks ago I realised that I needed to buy new bags for my Miele Cat and Dog vacuum cleaner. Imagine my annoyance when I changed the bag only to find that the filter also needed to be changed!
At first I thought this was just a matter of changing the filter cloth inside the housing but sadly in the model I have the ... whole thing needs to be replaced and I didn't have a spare one ready for the job.
I took a look on EBay - going via Quidco of course - and found the Miele Vacuum SFAAC50 S5260 Active Air Clean Filter for £7.89 plus £1.95 postage. There were others on there for sale but this was the best price that I could find.
The filter itself is rectangular and is black in colour with a honeycomb design on both sides. When you shake it you can hear the charcoal bits inside rattling about and you will need a good wash after you have fitted it as the charcoal does get on your hands to a certain extent.
The charcoal in the filter absorbs the odours as you clean so that the air coming out of the vacuum is fresh and doesn't leave the newly cleaned room smelling stale.
There is also a place on the front of the filter to write in the date on which you installed it to act as an aide memoir to remind you when to replace it. To be honest I just replace mine when it stops working - note to self - get another one so I always have a spare ready!
Fitting it is easy peasy. I just had to pull open the top of my vacuum cleaner, lift out the old filter which is located behind the bag across the exhaust and replace it with the new one. You will know it is fitted in place when you hear a satisfying click.
Incidentally the way that I knew that my old filter needed replacing was the fact that when I switched on the cleaner there was a loud click. On inspection the filter had jumped out of its housing and was standing proud of its surroundings. I pushed it back in and tried again a couple of times but when the same thing kept happening I realised that it was time to change the filter.
The instructions that came with my cleaner said that the filter needs to be changed every 12 months but I found that mine needed to be changed after about 8 months.
This is probably because, not only do we have a cat that sheds so much hair I am surprised that he isn't bald, we also have a log burner. I use the nozzle of the vacuum cleaner to clean the remaining ash from the front edge of the burner once I have brushed out as much as I can so I would expect the filter to need changing more often than it otherwise would.
So I have my new filter and my suction is back to normal - I suppose I had better do some hoovering now then hadn't I? Read the complete review |

Dyson Stair Tool
by nevikrose
It may seem funny to write a review of a single part on vacuum cleaner, but Dydson have a special name in household appliances, they are widely regarded as the best and they have a reputation for quality.
The stair tool is essentially a spare part, some models of Dyson come with the part included, some, like mine, do not. ... However, I was fortunate enough that a friend was replacing her vacuum for a more portable one and she gave me this part to attach to mine. It's bog standard grey, like most Dyson attachments it's made of thick, sturdy plastic. There are no bristles or fabric on it to fray or fall off so it's likely to last a long time.
The part is attachable to most models of Dyson vacuum, and is designed to use on carpeted stairs. I would comment on how it performs on wooden stairs but we don't have them unfortunately. The part has a lip to fit over the edge of the stair which is incredibly handy for hoovering the edge of a step, it also fits snugly into the corner of the stair so that you can get the dust out of the awkward places.
That said, £9 is a lot to pay for one spare part that essentially just does a slightly better job of the brush attachment that all Dysons come with. While it is well made, sturdy and convenient I would probably baulk at paying that much for something that probably should be included as default with every model.
It's unlikely to break, but if it ever did I doubt I would pay to replace it. Read the complete review |
