We bought this carpet, upholstery and hard surface cleaner after moving to a house with good quality but filthy carpets. The first carpet we cleaned with the Bissell had pet stains, coffee stains and other unidentifiable stains. Despite a lot of vacuuming the carpet also had a lot of pet hair (dog hair) embedded in it.

We had tried hiring a carpet cleaner previously (the Rug Doctor) but found it to be useless as it circulated the same dirty water over the carpet and didn't beat the carpet fibres. We decided that it would be worth investing in a good quality carpet cleaner as 4 uses of this cleaner is equivalent to hiring a carpet cleaner 4 times.

The Bissell has a system with tanks where clean water and cleaning solution is stored separately to the dirty water that comes out of the carpet. So you only get clean water going on your carpet (sounds obvious doesn't it? but not all carpet cleaners do this). The brushes are very effective - they brought all the pet hair in our carpet to the surface which we were then able to remove. Not even our Dyson managed to do that. We cleaned 2 living areas in an evening. The carpets came up beautifully - all the dubious stains were gone.

We haven't tried the cleaner on our tiled floors yet so I can't comment on that function. The hand tool works well.

Slight disadvantages are that the cleaner is heavier than a vacuum cleaner but should be manageable for most people unless you are fragile/have bad arthritis or a similar condition. The water and solution tanks need re-filling and emptying several times during cleaning but this didn't bother us.

If you buy this cleaner it's worth noting that you must use Bissell cleaning solution in it otherwise you invalidate the warranty. The solution isn't cheap but you can get it at a better price if you shop around online.
