I bought this Dustbuster from Black and Decker after seeing some favorable reviews of it online mainly for the purpose of trying to save some of the effort that went into vacuuming with a full sized Dyson all the time. I figured this would be useful with two little kids for when they inevitably spill crumbs, food and even drinks. For those occasions I had previously felt the Dyson vacuum was a bit overkill (especially when this happens about fifteen times a day on average!).
I've now had the Dustbuster for a couple of months, and I have found that it does a reasonable job on these little spills, although arguably a cheaper dustpan and brush may be just as effective. However this is certainly a handy little gadget to have around for convenience and cleanliness.
It sucks up fairly well, but strangely of the two adapters that come supplied with it, one doesn't seem to work while the other gives good results. The filter does need cleaning every two or three goes, so there is a bit of maintenance to bear in mind with this, and the other thing worth mentioning is that the battery life (it comes with its own mountable recharger dock) lasts only around eight minutes for a 24 hour charge. So you are not going to get round the whole house with this baby in one go! The other real plus I've found with this is the awkward hoovering of stairs (dragging the Dyson up and down these was a nightmare) and also hoovering out the car (which needs doing virtually every day with the kids in!).
Do bear in mind that the suction power on this is nowhere near that of a Dyson; you'll find yourself going back over the same spot a few times as you try to catch all the dirt, but it does get there in the end. Also the small nozzle means that nothing too big can get up the into the vacuum, think crumb spillages and nothing much bigger than that.
Overall, I'm happy enough with the Dustbuster, and as long as you don't forget to keep it on the charger, it is a handy little tool to whip out and it is light and portable enough that you can get your toddler using it as well!
Black & Decker 4.8v Wet & Dry Dustbuster Hand Vacuum.
I bought this hand vacuum from Black & Decker because I wanted something quick and easy to use around the house. I have never owned anything like this before and I eventually decided to go with this specific vacuum because it is lightweight and has a rechargeable battery. It is not the cheapest hand vacuum out there but I was willing to pay a bit extra for a higher quality product that would work better and last longer. I bought mine from amazon.co.uk for about £35 but they can be bought cheaper as I just saw that they sell them on the John Lewis website for £29.99.
The vacuum weighs 1.5kg and so is very light when using it. It has a nice design and its overall appearance is simple yet stylish. The handle is white and the vacuum shield is blue and transparent. It comes with a wall mount so it can be kept somewhere that it is convenient to grab and use. The vacuum is specially designed to be easy to use and the shape of it allows it to pick up spills and mess effectively. When you hold the vacuum to something it picks it up almost instantly, there is no need to shuffle the vacuum around to try to get a good angle on it because the shape of the vacuum shield allows it to work on any surface.
The battery is rechargeable and it takes about 16 hours to get it to full capacity. At full capacity, the vacuum will work at its best for approximately 10 minutes. Obviously, this does not sound like a lot of time in comparison to how long it is charging but I have not yet used the vacuum for more than 10 minutes at any given time. I use it mainly for spills and mess that take no more than a minute to clean up so after that, I put it back on its charger and then it is good to go again. I did not buy the vacuum with the intention of overusing it or using it on large spaces so this is probably why I have found it useful for what I needed it for.
The vacuum has a 250 mm/water suction power and I am not entirely sure what that means. I can tell you however that the vacuum has a strong suction power for its size and it picks up mess and dust very well. It takes literally seconds to clean up a mess and it is a lot less hassle than using paper towels or a cloth. There is a sponge inside the vacuum too which soaks up liquids. The suction power does start to dwindle the longer you use it as the battery runs low so does its ability to perform at a high standard.
The vacuum is quite loud for how small it is but it is definitely no louder than what I would have expected. Plus, when you are only using it for a minute or two the sound really does not matter too much. If you only use the vacuum from time to time then there is no need to empty it out very often at all. It has a large capacity inside of it, which means that you can collect more dirt and dust and not worry about having to empty it out.
Overall, I am really glad that I bought this hand vacuum and I am pleased with how well it works. However, I do not think that it is worth £35. It is a very useful appliance to have at home and it saves time and other resources but it is not a necessity. I would recommend this product to anyone who wants a hand vacuum for the purpose of minor spillages and some dust collecting. I would not recommend this product to anyone who needs to vacuum a large space for more than ten minutes at one time, as it would not be as affective as a regular vacuum cleaner.
Thank you for reading : )
I bought this a couple of months ago for my new flat which, to be honest, isn't big enough to justify a full vacuum cleaner. So far, I'm pretty happy with it, but I can well appreciate that a lot of people wouldn't be satisfied.
For a start, it's fairly expensive; there are much cheaper options available, but I went for this one because I wanted something that'd last. So far (although it's still early days) I've had no problems, and it feels very solid.
It was easy to setup (just take off the bits of plastic/tape) but needed a full 24 hrs to charge before first use...and they're not joking: if you try to jump the gun you'll get a couple of seconds' use out of it. The long charge-time is a bit of a pain, but I think you're likely to face the same problem for a handheld vacuum cleaner; it would have been useful if it could run off mains power in addition to battery; I don't know if this option is available for alternative models.
In terms of appearance, it looks pretty nice: white and light-blue plastic. It's not too heavy either, considering that there's a battery and motor in there. The end of the nozzle is quite small which so it fits quite easily into corners.
To be honest, it doesn't last long after a full charge (a couple of hours) - 15 mins max, of which only the first 10 mins gives decent suction. This is fine for me, because I never have much floorspace to clean, but that probably isn't the case for most people.
The suction strength isn't that great, but because I haven't used another handheld vacuum so I can't really compare. I've got laminate flooring throughout so it doesn't take much to get the dust etc. up, and it does a perfect job. Using it on the rug is a no-starter though: it's just not powerful enough to pull bits and pieces up off the fabric; I normally end up having to pick bits out and then hoover them up afterwards. As I say, if you've got laminate flooring this is no problem at all; if you've got carpets throughout you won't stand a chance.
It's fairly easy to empty after use, but I've noticed that bits of paper etc. often get caught in the nozzle, which need tweezers to fish out. This doesn't happen all too often though, so I'm not too bothered.
Apparently, it can also be used to suck up liquids, but I haven't tried this yet; it looks like there's a big sponge inside which soaks it up.
All in all, I'm pretty happy with it: for fairly small areas of laminate flooring, it's fine. BUT if you'll want to use it for anything more than a single room, or if you'll need to use it on carpets/fabrics, I wouldn't recommend it (in fact, you'll probably be better off with a full vacuum cleaner).
I bought this vacuum a month ago from Currys. I wanted a small handheld cleaner to quickly pick up small pieces of rubbish from the floor. The suction is very poor; it picks up very light small pieces of rubbish but things like thread is not picked up effectively. The power runs out very quickly. I charge the vacuum for 3 -4 hours and it lasts only 10 minutes. To be honest, I don't use it very much because it doesn't do anything well. I am thinking of taking it back to the store but not sure if they will take it back. The rubbish is easy to remove. The cleaner makes such a loud noise; it is like someone is drilling through a wall. It does allow water to be vacuumed up but I have not used that feature yet. Overall, I wouldn't recommend this product. It is very expensive too at £35.
