A surprise disappointment from Bosch (Bosch BSG 82070)

Advantages: Lightweight, easy to manouevre, great on tile or laminate

Disadvantages: Not good on carpet

I have three very naughty black and white cats. However, before I adopted said cats, I bought a beautiful, light coloured rug which really tied my dining room together. Ever since the day the cats moved in, the rug has been the site of daily pitched battles: the hoover versus the moggies. And, frankly, the moggies are winning.

The Bosch BSG 82070 is designed to deal with pet hair. But, to my dispaly, it doesn't do a great job. It's well designed, light and manouevreable and has the latest HEPA filtration, but it's simply not powerful enough to deal with the daily shed of my shorthair cats.

The most impressive feature of this hoover is the laminate flooring setting. This skims over wood and tile so lightly that you really can dash around the room and get a great result. However, confront this vacuum with carpet and its performance falls off sharply. It's not too bad on my closely woven and relatively new, textured upstairs carpet, but on older or fluffier floor coverings, it's appalling. I find myself virtually having to scrub the pile with the hoovering attachment to get anything up - hard, hot, timeconsuming work! I have also experienced difficulties finding bags for it even in specialist shops, though you can buy these quickly and cheaply online if you can remember to order in advance!

On the upside, though, build quality is typically good - I've lumped and bumped it around the house and my partner has even thrown it down the stairs (by accident, not out of frustration!) and it's still working well.

Summary: Consider only if you have wood floors throughout!
