The Bosch GL 30 vacuum cleaner is designed specifically to be good at collecting pet hair and for cleaning carpets. We got ours as a wedding gift from John Lewis and before we even got our cat, but lady luck must have been shining on us as our little moggy sheds... Alot... An this vacuum cleaner is excellent at collecting his fur.
It is a small, compact but very powerful vacuum cleaner. It comes in a limited array of colours but we have ours in a standard black. The machine itself is small and looks a little like a rounded lawn mower. It sits flat at about a foot in height and width and around 2 in length. It has a sloped curved top with the functioning dials at the top end. At the back is the retractable mains cable. From out of the highest end on the top (if lying flat) comes the removable hose. This is a standard plastic concertina tube at the end of which is a solid black tube that is adjustable in length. On the end of this you attach your chosen vacuum head.
First thing to note about this vacuum cleaner is that it is very small and light weight and as such it is very mobile. It has an easy to grasp carry handle on it's side for easy portability. When in use there are 3 wheels on it, 2 at the back and one at the front that each rotate with good swivel capacity allowing for very easy turning and manoeuvring with it. It is excellent for small spaces and getting around doorways, tight corners, etc... I find it's mobility much better and more fluid than other vacuums I have used. This with the added bonus of the adjustable telescopic tube that allows for further control in terms of the height at which you can vacuum and as such, the angle at which you can reach things.
The cable is also very long and apparently allows for a 10m radius of ues. I think this is pretty accurate from experience. We have a small flat but I can get around most of it from one power socket which is very handy. It automatically retracts too when it has some slack so in theory you don't have alot of cable in your way. I have found this function to be a bit hit and miss and temperamental - it works less often than not when in use and tends to get stuck easily. When finished though and you unplug it it usually retracts very quickly - sometimes dangerously with it snaking rapidly across the floor!
For such a small unit, it is also incredibly powerful. This is apparently something to do with the new compressor technology and aerodynamic blades... To be honest, the jargon baffles and bores me but whatever it is they've done, they have done it right. There is a dial to adjust suction but I tend to just have it on the highest setting and it picks everything up from the finest cat hairs to stray twigs. You do need to be careful with vacuuming anything too large though - although powerful enough the tubes is fairly narrow so things can easily get stuck.
The array of extensions it comes with are very good. I tend to always use the floor tool one as it seems the most powerful but it also is the loudest. Be warned - it makes a racket! Otherwise the upholstery and corner nozzles are similar to other vacuums but all are very easily attachable and detachable. The latter 2 are niftily stored in the vacuum itself do you don't have messy bits cluttering your house.
This vacuum is not bag less and this may be a downside for some. It doesn't really bother me and actually I find having a bag to contain the waste is cleaner and often more hygienic with less dust escaping. The bags are really simple to remove and clip into place unlike in some other models so you won't need a degree to work it out. It takes 4l bags that are specific to this model although I believe John Lewis also does one that fits and I'm sure other retailers will too.
In all, for a small space, this is an idea vaccum cleaner. it's nifty around tight spaces and very powrdul for it's size. We've had ours over a year now and only replaced the bag once and not experienced any issues with it. Although ours was a wedding gift I believe these retail at between £80-£100.
