Advantages: Looks real good and no dust escapes when vacuuming

Disadvantages: Not cheap, suction mediocre and emtying of dust container is a real nightmare

I bought my Dyson when I first moved into my current home, a couple of years ago now.

When deciding what vacuum cleaner to buy it appeared so simple with Dyson’s having such good press at the time. Also being an Asthma sufferer and having had bad experiences in the past when using a cleaner, it seemed to be the answer to my prayers. The Dyson claims that no dust escapes when using, making the whole vacuuming process a lot safer for allergic people like myself. This I can vouch to be true.

It also looks great. The design is both colour and unique and can be a definite talking point with friends and other visitors.

So straight after picking up the keys I went directly to the local department store and picked up my dual cyclone (DC02). After bringing it back I was well satisfied, it picked up the dirt/dust left by the previous occupants no sweat and no sneezing/wheezing for me. I told all my friends/relatives what a great buy it was, £220 at the time. On reflection it was not really that cheap when compared to the competition.

After using the Dyson I felt so smug looking at the transparent container holding all the gunk it had so happily picked up. It also gave me a great sense of satisfaction knowing there was no bag to change, another big selling point of the Dyson. That is until it was time to empty it. This is where the real problem with the Dyson concept begins.

The emptying of a Dyson is now a major operation in my house. I take out the dust container and pull a sack over it and tip it up. But no matter how careful I am, the dust still flies when removing the now full bag from the sack. Being an asthmatic this is not good I can tell you. I make sure I am facing upwind, but due to my close proximity to the sack this is often insufficient in saving me from a lungful of dust, the very thing I bought a Dyson to avoid. Then after I have finished wheezing and spluttering from the shockwave of dust, I loo
k in horror at the container. Half the gunk is still stuck to the bottom. I then have to look for a stick in the garden in order to poke inside the container and dislodge the remaining dust etc. This of course means I have to tip up the container into another sack, to finish the job, suffering a second dust shockwave in the process.

The Dyson’s suction is now only mediocre in my opinion; I use the small ‘corner attachment’ for most of my vacuuming, which is all very time consuming. If I don’t, it just does not get everything up. Any yes before you all shout i have bought all the replacement filters etc as recommended.

If you have got this far your realise I am not recommending the Dyson. It’s by no means awful, but it’s certainly not the wonder-product we had all hoped for.

Good review, well done!

Can agree with you on the emptying front, don't think i've ever had to empty a vacuum cleaner every week! And i only have a small family! THe new DC07 is marginally better, you pull a lever, and the cyclone opens at the bottom, so that slightly more dust ends up in the bag.

Henry's are much better -9 litre dust capacity, and the dust stays in!!!!

I happen to like my Dyson..I have had it for a while now, the only thing that I found was getting replacement filters was a bit difficult.
