Advantages: Superbly efficient . Can improve air quality
Disadvantages: Price
What is the big hoo-ha over Dyson vacuum cleaners, huh? It looks funny, looks gaudy and looks more like a child's toy? Well, to para-phrase the man who invented it <James Dyson> "When you go into a shop and see a row of vacuum cleaners, they all look the same, shiny, brand new and look powerful. Then you see this brightly coloured thing at the end with dust and dirt in the box. But if this vacuum cleaner has loads of dust and dirt pulled from a supposedly clean carpet, then, it's got to work, hasn't it?" and it is precisely this kind of lateral thinking which made this the product of the millennium!
To give you an idea of how powerful this thing can be run your house over with your regular cleaner, then try a Dyson <doesn't matter which one>. I guarantee you'll be shocked! I have nothing but praise for this machine as it has done the one thing that no other contraption has done <apart from my inhaler! > and that's clear up my asthma! The quality of the air in my house has improved ten-fold.
The DC04 <what I am reviewing> weighs about 12kg. It's quite heavy and definitely not one I'd recommend to someone who doesn't like lugging heavy machinery around. There is a lighter version of this model, which expels the cleanest air a Dyson can expel. Why all Dysons can't expel air that clean is beyond me. I've never had a problem with cleaning edges, but if your rooms aren't 4 sided then you may be better off with a cylinder cleaner instead.
The model I bought was a DC04 purple and lime dual cyclone. I paid £220 for it. It came with the HEPA filter but also the bactiguard filter. This Bactiguard filter was developed in Porton Down. It can kill all known bacteria and germs from E-coli to Legionnaire's disease. This helps improve the air quality expelled.
The De Stijl model is an extra £30. This model with no more extra features other than a bigger floor tool. My advice would stick with the model with the HEPA and Bactiguard filter.
The Dual Cyclone model is gradually being phased out. This is because Dyson have released a new technology. It is called the root8cyclone. This new cleaner has 40% more suction than the dual cyclone. It still doesn't lose suction and the models are tiered the same way as the dual cyclones were. For example, the most basic model all the way to the top model which has the HEPA and bactiguard filter with a floor tool.
The only problem I have with this product is the price. Although I could afford it, it was the most expensive on the market. But to be fair, once you have bought it, there are no filters, no part and no bags to buy!
Also, here's a small tip. If you are cleaning rugs with little tassles at the end with an upright Dyson. Make sure you don't get the tassles stuck in the head of the cleaner. It makes a loud, horrendous sound. A bit like an elephant being circumcised!
10 out 10 for this maverick inventor's invention! Well done! And between you and me...don't you find it kind of satisfying when you finish "Dysoning" and see all that dirt in the chamber.... hasn’t those 20 minutes been worthwhile to gather all that dirt out of your carpets...? :-)
Summary: A great vacuum cleaner which (in the long run) is worth the money.

- 09/11/07 A good start here but no need to mention all the marketing speak about Dyson machines other than your own - consumers et al can read that off the website. What would have made more handy reading is your opinion and experience regarding emptying the dust, using the smaller cleaning tools. Ive never had a problem with the DC04 picking up dirt at the edges, although there are other problems I have experienced.
I f you update your review or need assistance, let me know. Nar2
