We bought our DC05 as a second-hand refurbished model, and would never have considered spending the money to buy a brand-new one. After the experience of the DC05, though, I would absolutely consider buying new when this one dies - we absolutely love it. So much dust & dirt comes up out of the carpet - even when we ran it on a carpet that had already been vaccuumed with another cleaner. There have been a couple of breakages on ours - the clip that connects the straight tube to the bendy one, and the wiring at the base of the plug. Not too bad considering that it was quite old when we bought it, and it only cost us 35 pounds. Parts are readily available direct from Dyson at reasonable costs, so we'll replace the part with the damage clip when necessary - at the moment it's done up with tape. It did take us a little bit of fiddling to work out how to switch the head from the carpet setting to the hard floors setting, and to figure out how to take it apart for cleaning - the instruction sheets we found at Dyson online weren't very helpful. Once you know how to operate it, though, it's very easy to use, empty, and clean.

We've also bought a 'turbo head' for it, as we have two cats and a LOT of fur in the carpet. We weren't able to buy the part online from Dyson - after some messing around trying to work out why we weren't able to put the part in the shopping basket, we called their customer service number & discovered that they don't let you buy it online because some machines need an adaptor. There was a little bit of confusion about this - one person told us ours did need an adaptor, the other told us it didn't. In the end they supplied the adaptor at no charge, and also waived the usual handling charge for placing orders over the phone instead of online.

The only negative comment I have is that it is VERY NOISY. I'm not too concerned about this, seeing as we don't operate it every day and the machine does generate a lot of suction as well as noise.

Summary: Expensive to buy new - but I now think these are worth the money they cost.
