Advantages: suction is excellent, easy to use
Disadvantages: smaller capacity, not cheap
I have just bought a Dyson DC05 Absolute with the Turbo Brush. The advert said it was the most powerful cylinder vacuum with no loss of suction and I can honestly say that it is the best vacuum I have ever used. Usually when I do my bedroom I have to get down on my hands and knees with my rubber gloves to get all the fluff, dust, talcum powder etc from the edges of my carpet. I used my new Dyson and the Turbo Brush got all the muck up even from along the edges and the corners. My old Dyson was the first cylinder yellow and grey one, this one is lilac and green. It is a lot smaller in comparison to the old one and I was a bit worried that it would not be as powerful, but I couldn’t have been more wrong. It says in the instructions not to put your fingers/hands under the brushbar when the vacuum is in use, I can understand why they give out this warning because the power is so strong your fingers would be pulled into the roller. The old Dyson had filters that had to be replaced every 3 months at a cost of £10.00 for the pair. The DC05 has a lifetime filter which can be washed under the tap every six months, as long as you leave it to dry properly, usually 12 hours, you can just put it back in the vacuum. There is even a sticker inside the vacuum for you to keep a record of when you last did it. Another feature of the DC05 is the HEPA filtration, this is a Bacteria killing screen for the expelled air. Which is supposed to be helpful if you have someone in the house with allergies. I thought this would be worth trying as my husband suffers with hay fever and my daughter suffers from asthma. I found the DC05 very compact and easy to use. As it is smaller the bin that collects the muck is also reduced in size compared with the previous models so I found I was emptying it a lot more. But this could be because I was picking up a lot more muck and dirt. The tools are also kept in a different place to the previou
s vac. Instead of being inside the vac they are now on a holster attached to the hose. I found this a bit awkward when I was trying to actually vacuum, but you can remove them. The extension tube is a lot easier to adjust, great if someone else uses the vacuum who is a different height. The cable is also longer than previous, this is very useful as you don't have to keep unplugging the vac to do upstairs etc. The instructions that come with the Dyson are very clear to understand and cover everything from how to put it together once you get it out of the box to cleaning and maintenance. Dyson does give you a 2-year guarantee and the option of a further 3 years for £55 through Domestic and General. The cost of the DC05 varies between £220 to £233 and the extended guarantee I also found was only £39 at John Lewis. However, as with all extended guarantees, you should always check the small print first to see what it covers.

- 27/10/01 Oh no! I've got the old sort that need filters. But I've only changed them once in two years - that might explain the recent lack of performance! |
