Disadvantages: price, emptying
£230 for a vacuum cleaner!!!! Surely you'd have to be crazy! when you can get them for £50 or even less. That's what I thought when we bought our first hoover, a few years ago. And so, for the next 2 years, I spent countless hours hoovering the same spot 14 times to get one cat hair up, buying bags by the bucket load and swearing repeatedly because I had lost the attachments to the, now very wonky looking plastic tubes - probably due to the fact that the only way I could make the carpet look clean was to use the hard floor brush 'mode' of the vac on the carpets! And then.....just as the dustmite population was reaching kazillions.....a windfall, otherwise known as wedding list vouchers, produced one of the finest gadgets I have in my house (and I have lots!). A Dyson DC05 bagless vacuum cleaner. It really is a masterpiece of engineering; Its space-age looks are great, especially being clear in places so that you can see what you're picking up (if you have kids with lego - this is going to save you literally days!). It has a very modular design meaning that if anything was to break (unlikely) you can just replace the offending piece, quite cheaply I might add, from the Dyson web site. In fact, at one point I wondered if it might be cheaper to buy the cleaner in bits and assemble it at home! (it isn't). As for cleaning - it really is remarkable - it's almost as if you've washed your carpets! The amount of crud that came out of my 'clean' carpets was absolutely amazing - simple as that. It'll pick up anything, from any surface, with one pass and won't complain when it getting full either. My machine has a 'turbo brush' whizzing around at the end of it, which makes especially short work of cat hairs. (By the way, I've since bought the 'mini turbo brush' which is excellent for use in the car and on the stairs etc) It has brush/crevice/upholstery attachments on-board
for easy access, an automatic cable 'sucker-inner' and even a telescopic pole. The thing has even been designed to follow you up the stairs without rolling back down. Marvellous. About the only bad things I can say about this purple wonder is that the catches between the poles and the attachments seem a little weak (although they have been fine so far) and you have to be a little careful when emptying these bagless cleaners, so that you don't deposit the dust back into the air! In short, don't bother spending £50's every couple of years on machines which are, frankly, rubbish, and then all the bags and filters that go with them. Just shell out the cash up front for a world class machine that'll last you AGES if you treat it nicely. Cheers Mr D.
