Advantages: Amazing pick up. Easy to maintain. No running costs .
Disadvantages: A fairly heavy piece of equipment.
On using this machine for the first time I was astounded at the amount of dirt that had been sitting in my carpet! I didn't realise my house was so dirty!
To get straight to the point, this machine does what it's designed to do and it does it well. That's all I really want from a vacuum cleaner but some bonus points for me are as follows:
1. The machine was easy to assemble.
2. Instruction Manual is clear and concise.
3. No more bags!
4. No running costs (just a filter you wash every 3-6 months).
5. Machine is easy to maintain - ie, inevitable blockages are easy to get to and clear away and the brush bar is easy to access underneath to clear my long hair from!
6. 3 handy accessory tools - the stair tool, which apart from doing the obvious, also makes a good job of cleaning ginger cat hair from my settee! The brush tool which is good for cobwebs and dusting my television when I can't be bothered to do it the conventional way! Then there's the crevice tool which again is rather self explanatory!
Just a couple of down points:
1.The machine is quite heavy, although it's fine for me it may not be suitable for the elderly.
2.The belt is a bit of tricky thing to replace. Is rather fiddly and a tight fit. However, I telephoned Dyson's helpline and was greeted by a helpful operator who advised me on this in a language I understood!
Overall, I am very pleased with my purchase. I think I got value for money at £199.99, although I have since seen these models for less. You can buy this model and many others from Dyson's extensive range in most electrical stores such as Curry's, Comet and Powerhouse. Also, department stores such as John Lewis and House of Fraser tend to stock them but I noticed that they were at a considerably higher price. Argos was my shop of choice, they had plenty in stock and seemed to have a great range to choose from. You can also buy Dyson vacuum cleaners from your local supermarket now. My local Sainsbury's always seem to have them on offer but the range is extremely limited. Not forgetting the manufacturer themselves, you can buy directly from Dyson, either over the phone - 08705 275104 or online - www.dyson.com, although they do sell at their suggested selling price so it may be best to shop around. Their website is very useful and they have a section called "Which Dyson?" where by you answer a series of questions and the computer advises you which of their machines best match your needs. The one thing I would recommend to potential buyers (particularly those who are switching from a cylinder machine) is to go to a local store, even if you aren't going to buy it there, and just have a go on a demonstration model. That's what I did and I'm glad I did. There are so many to choose from but for me, living on my own with a VERY hairy cat and all carpets - this is definitely the one for me.
Happy vacuuming!
Summary: Although there are cheaper machines, I feel I have got value for money.

- 08/11/05 I got one of these about five years ago, they do get less efficient over time, or maybe I need some bits replaced. Definitely the best I've found for animal hairs tho. |

- 06/11/05 I have a Dyson too, but a different one; I think it cleans very well, but I have had to replace many parts over 3 years, so I was very happy to have taken a 5 year extended guarantee! |
