Advantages: Works really well, Don't have to buy new filters, Easy to use/empty

Disadvantages: Not many, Expensive

I had never wanted a Dyson! I considered them to be over-priced and thought that they couldn't possibly be as good as everyone claimed. A couple of weeks ago we had a new living room carpet delivered and were so pleased with it that we decided we needed a new vacuum cleaner. We wanted to keep the carpet is as good a condition as we could, for as long as possible. Our old vacuum cleaner (a Hoover Turbomaster) wasn't picking up very well, so it was time to invest in a new cleaner.

My mother-in-law had just got a Dyson from her catalogue and showed it to us; a vacuum cleaner for us is a very large buy, so we wanted to think long and hard before spending our pennies. It seemed great and we were suitably impressed with the performance. On the way home we called in at Currys and took the plunge. It was quite a wrench parting with the cash, but we came home with a Dyson DC07 - The purple/ turquoise model.

DYSON HISTORY~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

For those of you who have never heard of Dyson here is a brief history of the product. You have my permission to skip past this if it doesn't interest you!

James Dyson, a former student of the Royal College of Art, was a designer and inventor. He was responsible for the award winning Ball Barrow; a wheelbarrow that could go over terrain a normal wheelbarrow couldn't tackle. In 1978 he built the first Industrial Cyclone Tower and 5 years (and 5,127 prototypes) later the first bagless vacuum cleaner appeared. In 1991 the G-Force vacuum won the International Design Fair Award in Japan, where it had become a major status symbol. They were very expensive and still only available to a privileged few.

In June 1993 James Dyson opened a research facility and factory near his home in Wiltshire to develop an even better machine that could collect even smaller dust particles. The DC01 Dyson was born!

Dyson weren't satisfied and developed the Root8Cyclone system that divided a
ir into 8 cyclones (rather than the original Dyson's dual cyclone system) to get 45% more suction. Dysons grew in popularity and became a design classic - you can even view them in the Science Museum and museums around the world!

MY DYSON~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

My Dyson is the purple and turquoise; the purple has little sparkly bits in it and is very pretty (for a vacuum cleaner!). It cost us £268 from Currys. The similar Blue and turquoise model is currently selling for £269.50 in Index; shop around as they do vary in price considerably.

FEATURES~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

~~~~~~Hepa Filtration.
This is a special feature that cleans the air that is expelled from your Dyson; this is great and is highly recommended for anyone with a dust allergy or asthma. I get a bit wheezy and my nose itches if I do too much dusting or vacuuming; this didn't happen with the Dyson! (A bad move...no more excuses for not doing the housework).
~~~~~~~High Velocity Air Flow Tools.

These include a stair tool, brush tool and crevice tool, which work in conjunction with the hose and handle to channel the air without sticking to your upholstery and carpets, etc. I find these to be very handy for getting into the little awkward places and for cleaning things that you can't reach with an upright vacuum.

~~~~~~~~Lifetime Filters.
A great thing because you never have to buy or replace your filter again. All you have to do is remember to wash the blue and yellow bit of the filter every 6 months to stop you losing any suction and to prevent it getting clogged up. I haven't had to do this yet, but the instructions seem pretty straight forward.
~~~~~~~~Anti-jam Brushbar.

This little extra helps stop tassels and things on rugs getting caught in your cleaner. I think this is really good because I have tried to suck a bathroom mat up my Hoover on various occasions! There is also the option to t
urn this off if you don't want it; very versatile!

~~~~~~~~Edge Cleaning Whiskers.
No, this has nothing to do with stopping you vacuuming up your cat!!! They are little brushes that resemble whiskers that let you clean right up to the edges of the room. I like this and was pleased we chose this model because it's not available on all Dysons.
~~~~~~~~~Auto-adjusting Cleaner Head.

I find this to be a godsend when going between different floor surfaces. On my other cleaner we had to manually change the height of the brushes when going from room to room; saves time, energy and having to bend down every five minutes to find the switch!

~~~~~~~~~Motor Protection Bleed Valve.
Sounds very technical, but is actually a very useful feature. This pumps cold air directly onto the filter to prevent over-heating. If you have ever experienced your vacuum cleaner overheating you will know what a great idea this is.
~~~~~~~~~Ready to go Hose.

Another godsend! The long flexible hose reaches right up to the top of the stairs in my house. The days of straining and nearly causing nasty accidents with toppling hoovers are over! It's simple to use because it is already attached and is very convenient.

~~~~~~~~~Remote Trigger Bin Emptying.
I find that the dust bin is very clean and convenient to use. You can empty it simply and without ever coming into contact with the dust and grime. This was also great for my dust allergy...I've shot myself in the foot again, because I can't con my husband into emptying it all the time!
~~~~~~~~~Reversible Wand.

Sorry, but this isn't a prop from the next Harry Potter film! This is a feature that allows you to rotate the handle of the Dyson to hake it easier to direst and use. I was very impressed with how easy this was to operate and that it went back together with no headaches and fuss.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Additional tools and accessories for your Dyson can be purchased either using the order form in the box or via the Dyson web-site (www.dyson.com). If you need to contact them they can be contacted from 8 til 8 Monday to Friday, by phone on 08705 275 104 (UK), or at service@dyson.com. I haven't needed to do this, so I don't know how good the Customer Service is. I also haven't purchased any of the extras because, so far I am happy with the tools I have (my husband is very pleased I mentioned that LOL!).

I am really impressed with my Dyson DC07. It's easy to use and does a really good job. I am confident that it will keep my new carpet in tip top condition and my existing carpets have never looked so good. I would recommend this product to anyone - in fact, they've got a bit fed up of my husband going on about it at work! Don't be alarmed by the amount of dirt it sucks up when you first use it though. I was quite frightened at first and felt a bit ashamed that we had been living in such squalor.

A Dyson may cost more than the average vacuum cleaner, but I think it's well worth paying the extra for the quality that you receive. They cost more because they are NOT an AVERAGE vacuum cleaner; they are certainly way above average! Trying one changed my perception of them; I would advise you to try one too. I don't think I would have spent all that money if I hadn't seen how good it was first.

Although it is quite a major purchase, and a pretty large outlay of cash, I would seriously suggest that you consider a Dyson when you are next replacing your vacuum cleaner.

Right, I'm off for a lie down now - that's quite enough domestication for one day. Alun - can you get me a nice cold beer now please?

Hi, and welcome to dooyoo!

I've got a DCO3 and I'm devoted to it. It's not worth wasting the money on cheaper vacuums.

I really enjoyed your opinion - thanks!

Sue :)
