Advantages: Suction is much better than of its competitiors

Disadvantages: Filters need cleaning regularly - or will overheat

I bought the Dyson DC07 over 5 years ago from a Currys store in the city centre for around £250 and I have to admit that when we first bought it it had great suction and worked really well

Unfortunately, what we didn't realise (and were never told) is that the side filter needs to be kept clean as does the filter above the motor - which you're not supposed to touch

My wife thought it'd be a great idea for us to use it for cleaning up plaster dust from diy work I was doing around the house - big mistake! This is one cleaner that hates dust. (Plaster dust anyway).

Luckily we took out a 5 year extended warranty which we really needed - we needed replacements of the following parts: motors (x 3), heppa filter (x 4), side filter (replaced paper one with foam x 2), filter above motor, belt for the brush, a new chassis and hose (x2), plastic storage containers (x3). Yes, apart from the tools that came with it originally the whole cleaner has been replaced part by part over the 5 years. We were so popular with the Dyson engineer that my wife (since seperated) was on first name terms with him.

We were probably unlucky, as when it worked properly and was totally clean our other cleaners couldn't match it for suction power, but very rarely did we experience the dust spinning at the bottom of the dust collector. I'm not aware of any one else having problems with this model (and it looks great in green and purple), but a shop that fixed our microwave had about 15 DC01's all with burnt out motors.

Assuming your home is not too dusty you should seriously consider this cleaner - but make sure you take out the warranty and keep the filters clean. My partner and I are seriously considering buying a Dyson - just not sure which one at the moment, but the price on this one has gone down a lot since I bought my original one and is now a reasonably priced model. I am not going to score this badly, as on the majority of occassions it was our fault. However, reliability wise my score is lower as the motors are prone to over heating.

Summary: For a mid range cleaner there aren't any better one around
