Advantages: Super suction, looks smart!
Disadvantages: Quite heavy, loud and frightens the cats!
I moved house last month and needed a new vacuum beacuse our last one was about 10 years old and had the suction quality of a goldfish with a straw...
Looking for something completely different (and effective), we did lots of reasearch (or as much research as it's possible to do into vacuum cleaners without dying of boredom) and decided on the Dyson DC14 All Floors.
Spurred on by the favourable reports of Dyson-owning friends and a desire to get something much slicker than the old hoover that used to clutter up our last place, we opted for the silver and orange Dyson DC014.
It's got loads of features, including: telescope reach and extendable hose (works really well but can be bit unwieldy!), "Root Cyclone Technology" (whatever that is but apparently it stops the machine losing suction so can only be good and remains to be tested), a big space for the sooked up dirt (which means that it doesn't need to be emptied so often).
Also, it's approved for allergy sufferers by the British Allergy Foundation. I can't say if this works better than your average hoover because we had the Dyson before we got our kittens but, despite being prone to sneezing around cat fluff, I've not suffered from this much.
Because it's designed for use on all floors, it's ideal for going between wooden floors and carpet without needing to change the setting to pick up dust.
I'm loving the fact that no bags are required and it's easy to see when it beeds to be emptied. Due to the "slick" colours, I have even been showing it off (sad, I know)!
The only downsides are that it makes quite a loud noise and we've had to keep the cats out of the room whilst using it(I'm also slightly scared that because the suction is so great, they might inadvertently get sucked up!!). Also, it's pretty bulky for lugging up and down stairs - not a light object.
We bought it for £200 on a Comet special offer so it's not cheap in comparison to ordinary vacuums, but it's worth it because of the suction quality and the end results - the carpets are gleaming!
All in all, I'd definitely recommend one and am a Dyson convert!
Summary: Not a cheap option, but worth every penny!

- 29/11/06 Glad you're pleased with your DC14. I had mine for two years and wasn't pleased with it. It cleaned OK but far too fiddley to use the hose and was very noisy. I ended up replacing with Hoover ONe Pet model after having the hose replaced for the forth time. |
