Advantages: Beautiful to look at, incredibly powerful

Disadvantages: Expensive

I got married at the beginning of June and like many couples my wife and I made a wedding gift list with a few things we'd like to have for around the home. One of the things we put on the list was a Dyson vacuum cleaner as our current vac was getting a bit old and past it.

My generous boss has been saying for weeks that he'll get it for us and yesterday afternoon (much to my amazement), it finally arrived!

Now, I don't normally drone on about packaging and how products look, but the DC14 truly is a thing of beauty! Delivered in a shiny black box, the cardboard somehow oozes class... quite how cardboard oozes class, I'm not sure... but it does!

After getting it home, I immediately got to work on getting it out of the box, eager to do the vacuuming - yes, you read that right! I was looking forward to vaccing up!! :) However, opening the box was somewhat more tricky than I thought due to the copious amounts of glue that are used in the Dyson factory.

A few fingernail breakages, a small bout of swearing and several finger lacerations later I was in. The beast of a vacuum cleaner was staring up at me from the bottom of the box! I quickly discarded the excess packaging materials and instruction manual (really, what man needs instructions?) and set about fixing all the bits together. Several satisfying clicks later and she was complete. My new Dyson stood tall and proud in our living room. She really is a work of art, a thing of beauty and a joy to behold. But how well does she work?

Time to take her for a test drive...

I wheeled the Dyson out into the hall and plugged her in. I could see her standing there, surveying the dirt on the carpet that had been left behind by the inferior vac that preceded this feat of engineering. Pressing the on button she purred into life gliding seamlessly around the carpet, picking up everything in sight that wasn't tied down. Outside a mother kept a tight grip on her young son, fearful of him getting sucked into the votex that my new beautiful friend had created.

Seconds later and the hall was spotless... time to press the girl's buttons and switch her onto hard floor mode for the kitchen... gleefully she changes tack and within 2 shakes of a lamb's tail the kitchen floor is clean enough to eat off.

Next we move onto the stairs where Mrs Dyson shows off her beautiful long neck which would put most giraffes to shame. A couple of beautifully crafted heads help me give the stairs their best cleaning in years and Mrs Dyson and I retire to the bedroom to continue our cleaning fun.

This is the first Dyson I've owned and I'm not ashamed to say that I'm in love with her already. She's great to look at, quiet and easy to move around (if only my wife were like that!). It's a bit heavier than I expected, but it simply glides over the floor with the grace of an Olympic figure skater. It may only be a new relationship, but this is one I can see lasting for years.

Summary: A thing of beauty that actually makes me want to vac up

I bet the relationship with you and her doesn't last. I know from experience that this hoover is quite heavy on the stairs. It's easy to use the attachments and the nozzle and when I house sit next month and use it I will probably review it as well as I like it lots :D

Good review although it would be handier to know if its noisy, if its heavy and if emptying is as clean as they say.
