Dyson - I think probably just about everyone has heard of the Dyson vacuum cleaners by now. If not where have you been! That does not mean to say that everyone will like them or that they can afford one. So my review is about my experience of my Dyson and why I bought it.
I have had several Hoovers over time of various brands, initially spending about £100 on well know brands that lasted a year and just didn't cut it in the cleaning department. I finally decided to buy a Dyson motorhead version which did a fantastic job and lasted over 5 years! Before finally succumbing to being chewed by my puppy and then eventually dying after a fall down the stairs.
So I had to decide whether to risk another brand or splurge on a new Dyson?
The Dyson won.
My deciding factors were due to the above mentioned and the fact that I now own two Siberian husky's. For those that don't know, husky's don't justify malt like regular dogs - they shed fur all year round and then have what we call a blow out once or twice a year. This fun time is when you can literally pluck tufts of soft fur out off them! So far Dyson is the only brand that has coped.
I bought my Dyson DC14 animal from the Amazon website for £280 2 years ago now. I know it is a lot of money but I do feel I get my moneys worth. The version I have got has been updated now and you can get lighter weight versions with slightly better technology, but generally they are all similar.
Mine weighs in at around 12kg, which is relatively heavy for lifting up and down stairs.
The vacuum comes with various attachments, which I will note separately plus there are many other little extras for dyson's that you can buy later.
It comes in a mainly grey colour body with clear waste bin. Different models have different colours for little parts like the handle ends and hose connections - mine are red.
***Using the vacuum***
Push button start at the front above the handle. Nice and big button easy to press on/off but not in a place where it is easily turned on/off by accident.
Mine has the option for two floor types. To get it going first choose your floor type (hard floor or carpet) and flip a switch near the front base where indicated on the machine. This can be a bit stiff. Then push the front of your hoover base forward towards the floor whilst holding the handle and it releases the vacuum for easy canoeing and turn on. All this is explained in the manual. Very simple and much like other upright vacuums.
This is the hose attachment basically. You unclip the hose from the back of the hoover and extend out. You can also attach various bits, crevice tool, stair tool and small brush. Mine extends to the top of my stairs which is 12 standard steps, from the bottom. Very useful if you don't need to take the vacuum up stairs. Mine also comes with a mini turbine head. Especially for stubborn dog hairs. A small attachment but very powerful, very noisy and makes your hands shake!
The filter is a HEPA filter which apparently is a hospital level bacterial killing filter, also handy to know is that all Dyson's carry the British Allergy Foundation seal of approval. These filters should be washed every 6 months. Now I am not brilliant at remembering that sort of thing, but when I registered my Dyson to the website they send out an email to remind me!
Probably the most important bit for everyone. Dyson's standard bag less system uses a bin instead. Push button release from vacuum so can be easily carried to the bin. Then mine has two more button releases one for bottom to flip down and empty, but if bits are stuck a top release too. The bin can get dirty and it does mean you can see the dirt! But at least you know you have cleaned your carpet!
Alongside all of these bit's the Dyson motto is that they never loose suction. Ok mine has, but to be fair it is usually when half a dog teddy leg is sucked up the extendable hose and blocks it. It generally is very easy to remove from the bin and off you go. Occasionally it is a bit harder but the Dyson has so many bits you can pop on and off to release blockages it is a maze of pieces. I do recommend doing these one at a time or you could find yourself there for hours trying to puzzle it back together.
Easy to clean the floor head once you follow the instructions, but I rarely need to do mine, tends to be long bits of wool type items that coil the brush head.
The suction power is fantastic, even sucking the carpet up slightly in places and it does clean very well.
Overall exceptional and I could not do without mine and I really mean that! Plus you get the added benefit of a 5 year guarantee as standard. The instructions are also very simple and easy to follow.
