Dyson DC14 Origin
Advantages: No loss of suction
Disadvantages: Quite heavy
This is actually my Mums vaccuum but I have been staying with my parents for a few weeks and helping out with the cleaning so I feel I am ready to review this.
My Mum has always been a big fan of Dyson's for as long as I can remember and she purchased this one in Currys about 2 years ago for £148.99, to replace her DC03. My Mum loves this product and thinks it is the best one she has ever had.
About the product
The Dyson DC14 Origin is an upright cleaner, it is mainly grey, with a splash of yellow and a transparent bin. The three attachments which are included as standard are the stair tool, brush tool, and crevice tool which are useful to clean different areas. It also features a quick release telescopic reach wand for hard to reach places and the attachments fit easily to the end of the wand or you can remove the wand handle and fit them to the hose instead.
This product features the Dyson patented root cyclone technology - basically there is no bag which means that the DC14 maintains 100% suction at all times. A small leaflet that comes with product explains how this all works but basically dust particles can clog the tiny pores of a vacuum cleaner bag and therefore block the airflow, resulting in a loss of suction. Instead of using a bag to separate the dirt from the air this product subjects the air to centrifugal forces - greater than 100,000 times those of gravity - which force even the tiniest of dirt particles to be separated from the air.
An A4 user guide is included when you purchase the D14 and this uses diagrams and text to show you how to use the product to its full potential, as well as how to empty and clean the bin, and how to wash the filter (which is recommended you do every 6 months.)
Emptying and Cleaning the bin
Because the bin is transparent it is clear to see when your bin needs emptying. To do this you simply press the catch on top of the cyclone which releases the cyclone and bin from the rest of the machine. You can either empty the bin directly into your dustbin or into a bag first which is recommended for allergy sufferers - hold the bin over your dustin or in a bag and push the button on top which releases the dirt through the bin base. You should let the dust settle and securely close the bin base before lifting the bin out and refitting it to your machine.
To clean this you, once you have emptied the bin you press the catch and this separated the clear bin from the cyclone. The shroud of the cyclone can then be cleaned with a brush or a dry cloth, whereas with the bin you can rinse this with cold water to clean.
As I stated before my Mum loves this product and to be honest I have to say I do too (and wish I could afford one!) It is quite attractive to look at as vacuum cleaners go, and it really is very powerful. At first I thought it was a bit strange with the clear bin but actually I find it quite interesting to see how much dirt comes up even when the floors look pretty clean and obviously the fact that it is transparent means you can always tell when it needs to be empty. I like the fact that this features the wand and hose as well as being an upright cleaner and it is really easy to switch between different modes of vacuuming. It is very easy to use but should you require any help the user guide is really clear with its diagram and texts. The only downside to this product I believe is the weight - both my Mum and I feel that it is really quite heavy for a vacuum cleaner which is a bit of a pain as my parents house is on 4 floors. But aside from that this is an extremely powerful hoover and the Dyson claim that it does not lose any suction has so far proved true in our case. I have also never experienced any issues with the body of the machine toppling over when using the hose/wand as some other models are prone to do.
I would definitely recommend this product and it come with a 5 year guarantee which I think is very good. I think if you can afford it this product is definitely worth its money, particularly if like my parents you have pets as it is great at picking up dog hairs too. Personally its way out of my price range (we just recently purchased a VAX for about £40) but if money was no object I would definitely replace it with one of these.
Summary: A great upright cleaner with hose & wand, very powerful, never loses suction, easy to use and clean
