Advantages: Excellent suction, easy to use, easy to clean, easy to fall in love with!
Disadvantages: Heavy
We have recently purchased a new dyson and are extremely happy with it. Before our newest one we had our old dyson for 8 years and it was only right towards the end that the suction was not quite as strong and so I decided to treat myself to a new toy!
The suction on the DC14 is outstanding. We have a lionhead house rabbit and when he molts, boy does he molt! Sometimes when you are sitting down you will see wafts of grey fur float past you. When he molts I just cannot imagine using a vacuum with a bag. We half fill the dyson in just two hoovers of the house! Now I know dyson cleaners are expensive but if you have a pet, I imagine you will make you money back in bag savings pretty quickly.
Also, it brings the carpets up well and really seems to fluff them up. Where there are indentations from chair or table legs, a few goes over with the dyson and they pretty much bounce back to their original condition. This happens throughout the house on different carpets so I do not think it is just good quality carpet. I am sure it is the strong suction of the dyson.
The hose is easy to use. I'm a bit lazy so tend to stretch the hose as far as possible, rather than unplug the dyson and move it. I think I have only once managed to pull the cleaner over when doing this and I did give it a hefty tug! It is very sturdy and easy to use. All the attachments fit on easily and do their job well.
It does not make too much noise either. Our rabbit is quite a timid chap and yet he has had a good many fights with the dyson when I've tried to hoover his room (yes! The spoilt bunny does have his own room in the house! Well, it's not like we really needed a dining room!)
It is simply to empty. The whole of the front comes away from the back and base of the dyson, which incidentally stays standing well and does not topple over when you are doing this. I then take the whole dust compartment out to the bin, unclip the top from the bottom and tip it out straight into the dustbin. Even when I have emptied it inside, I have never spilt the contents on the floor or had to hoover up any bits that have dropped out.
With our old model, some strong had caught around the front and stopped the suction entirely. It was very easy to unscrew the front, take the pieces apart and clean it out. Also simple to put back together again!
The after sales service from dyson is outstanding. Even when ours was not under warrantee (as I said, it lived 8 happy years with us) we phoned up about a fan belt and they posted a new one out to us at no charge! What more could you ask for?
The only slight negative is that is tends to be quite heavy to move around, especially if you want to carry it upstairs.
Expect to pay between £150 and £250 for this model.
I would recommend any model of dyson. All those that I have used have been excellent.
Summary: Brilliant! I wouldn't be without mine!

- 13/08/08 If you think its great at suction, pull back the duvets on your beds, empty the Dyson and then Dyson up the mattress cover. You'll be in for quite a surprise. |
