Advantages: Ball feature which makes it easy to move around, lifetime washable filters, clear cylinder, no bags
Disadvantages: Very loud, cumbersome and heavy.
Dyson is a well known brand of vacuumand is supposed to be one of the best brands on the market so when our old hoover packed up I knew straight away I wanted a Dyson. I wasn't sure which model I was going to go for and I was on a limited budget at the time so I had a browse on the internet at models and prices. Most were way out of my price range at that moment in time and I needed a hoover pretty quickly because I have dogs and with dogs come lots and lots of hair! I decided to go onto eBay and see if they had any second hand Dyson's I could afford and came across several sellers that were selling reconditioned Dyson's at a very reasonable price with 6 or 12 months guarantees so I decided to get one on there. I plumped for the Dyson DC15 Animal because it was described by Dyson as having "powerful all-round pet hair removal. Lifetime HEPA filter and BACTISAFE bacteria-killing screen. Brush control turns brushbar off at the touch of a button. Large debris channel picks up debris that others can leave behind. Mini Turbine Head - cleans pet hair from confined spaces." That's just what I wanted because the hair that my dogs leave on the sofa and carpets is unbelievable, they may be small but you wouldn't know it if you saw the hair that comes off them!
As I said I bought a reconditioned model from eBay for just £50 with £10 delivery charge. I bought mine I'd say about 3 years ago now and it's an old model now so I expect it would be hard to find new from any retailers but there are some on eBay. Parts for this machine are also available from various online retails and eBay.
The vacuum itself is an upright and is a nice silver and purple colour. To be honest I'm not fussed about how a hoover looks as long as it picks up all the hairs off my carpet and furnishings I'm happy. It weighs 12KG which I didn't think about at the time but in reality using this it is very heavy. Lifting it up each stair hoovering the stairs is a job as it's very cumbersome and heavy. I can manage to take it upstairs but an elderly person would have trouble with it due to it's size and weight.
This hoover has the well know Dyson Ball feature which I really wanted. It's designed to twist and turn easily with just the turn of your wrist. I do find this very very easy to steer when I'm vacuuming the carpets. It glides around very easily and I can turn directions with very little effort. It has a mini turbine head attachment that is ideal for removing pet hair and dirt from confined spaces such as upholstery, stairs and the car. I used it on the chairs and sofa and it really did pick up the hairs well. The trouble is it broke very quickly. It's just like a mini hoover head and is plastic but it's two halves that fit together with the brush inside. The halves kept coming apart and the brush inside would fall out and I kept having to put it all back together and eventually it totally broke.
Cleaning carpets using this in the upright position is very easy but when it comes to having to use the telescopic reach on this for stairs, curtains and sofas it's very cumbersome and awkward to use and I hate it. The metal pipe is sort of hidden in the handle down the back of the hoover so you have to pull it out to it's full size. The trouble is that the piping on the hoover isn't flexible enough and with your great big upright hoover that weighs a ton attached to it you're very restricted in your movements. I'm forever grabbing the flexible pipe and pulling it out to give myself more flexibility to move. It's hard to fully describe, I've had other uprights that weren't so awkward to use. They also describe this hoover as being able to glide into awkward spaces but I don't think it does really. I cannot get up to the edge of the walls with this so have to use the telescopic wand to go round all the edges which is a pain.
What I do like is that it has a clear cylinder so I can see how full it's getting and know at a glace if it needs to be emptied. It doesn't need bags so that saves money as well. It's very easy to empty with the touch of a button so there's no need to get my hands dirty and then I just pop the cylinder back in place. I used to have a great deal of trouble with my last upright which was very fiddly to get clicked back in place after emptying. It has a HEPA filter + Bactisafe: Dyson Root12Cyclone which captures microscopic particles, whilst the HEPA filter with Bactisafe screen traps and kills bacteria and mould on contact. I can't say I've noticed the benefit of this myself but the filters are lifetime washable so there's no extra cost involved buying new filters. It has Root Cyclone Technology which Dyson say "spins air at high speed. Dirt and dust are thrown out of the airflow and collected in the bin, not on filters or in bags. So unlike other machines, Dyson doesn't clog and lose suction, so it picks up more dirt." Having two dogs at one point until recently 3 dogs they shed a lot of hair. The carpets and sofa always have hair on them which I hoover daily. I noticed the other week that when I was hoovering the air blasting out of the hoover smelled of old socks and stunk the room out! I hadn't paid attention to how full it was and when I looked you could see it was full of dog hair, I could have made another two chihuahuas out of it lol. I emptied it out and the smell was gone.
Lastly be warned, this hoover is very very loud. My dad has just 20% hearing and wears a hearing aid in the one ear that still has some hearing left. If he comes over and I am hoovering even he can't stand the noise and actually switches his hearing aid off and sits there totally deaf until I finish so that's saying something!
All in all it's an ok hoover, nothing fancy and I wouldn't have paid full price for it. It does pick up hair and debris very well when used in it's upright position. The ball feature is great and it does make using it easier however it's just too darn heavy and cumbersome for using to hoover the stairs and the telescopic feature doesn't have enough flexibility and movement needed. It also doesn't get close enough to edges.
Summary: Ok hoover but wouldn't have paid the full price for it
