Advantages: handy, efficient, easy to use
Disadvantages: bye bye battery
I have a really bad back, and when I was pregnant I also developed SPD (Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction) which made getting up and down the stairs really painful, near on impossible at times. The last thing I wanted to do was carry my big hoover up and down the stairs all the time, but I didn't want to never hoover upstairs either!
My husband very sweetly thought of getting me a handheld hoover. The idea being that I could sit on the stairs to hoover thus easing my back a bit, and scoot down the stairs on my bottom (which I had to do anyway due to the SPD) whilst sitting down to hoover. Bless him, it was the best thing he ever bought!! Despite our daughter now being 2, I still use the handheld hoover on the stairs every time.
My husband chose the Dyson DC16 as it was the best model at the time, and we know and love Dyson hoovers having had a full size one.
The hoover comes with a docking station that charges it, which can be wall mounted or just plugged in. We used to just plug ours in as and when needed, but when we bought one for my grandma, we mounted it to the wall to make it easier for her so she didn't need to fetch it out of a cupboard all the time.
The hoover is so handy - from little spills (like hubby not using a plate and getting crumbs everywhere - DO NOT get me started!!) to cat fur, biscuit crumbs, bits of mud (hubby again!) - you name it, I'll use the Dyson for it!
The Dyson is supposed to last for six minutes when fully charged and in my experience it really did. The only downside is that when you have a big job, like really messy stairs or when you're doing the car, six minutes isn't always enough, and you then have to wait for it to charge before you can use it again. Charging takes at least a few hours, so in the meantime the job is only half done!
I tended to use mine to vacuum the sofa after my daughter has had a snack, fur from the cats, and even the piles you make when you sweep the floor. It is so much quicker and easier, not to mention more efficient, than a dustpan and brush!
I had the Animal version which is designed for pet owners. It has a wider nozzle attachment, a long nozzle attachment and a brush attachment. All of them work well, apart from the brush does need de-clogging every now and then. I was surprised at how well the brush coped with pet hair, as normally it tends to collect on the bristles, but with the Dyson 99% was sucked into the hoover and very little left on the bristles. The suction power of the Dyson is out of this world - it really is the best hoover I have ever come across, you can't fault that.
The only problem was that within a year the battery started to give up. This meant that it just wouldn't hold its charge and barely worked at all. For over £100 for the hoover, you expect a brilliant battery. What's worse is that a replacement battery is approx £40, so a bit of a waste! If they could sort this problem, it'd be 5 stars. But for now, it's 4.
