Advantages: Nice compact lightweight size, well designed, good suction, clean to empty

Disadvantages: Small tank size (just means you have to empty a bit more often)

My old vacuum cleaner gave up the ghost the day before a Christmas family gathering last year. Faced with a carpetful of dog hair the only thing to do was to go out and purchase a new one.

I'd always wanted a Dyson and my hubby said he would "treat" me to one for Christmas. Don't worry, it wasn't my only present from him, but even if it was I couldn't complain because I have praised it constantly since.

I opted for the DC18 Slim line All Floors model. The main reason I chose it is because it is lighter to carry about than other models (so good for stairs etc) and its nice and compact for storage. It is also for all floors and I have used it on carpets, vinyl tiles, ceramic tiles and bare wood. The downside to the fact it is slim line is that it gets full more quickly and so it needs emptying more often, but I haven't found that to be a problem.

The cylinder where the dirt collects is clear so you can see when it is full. And emptying it is a clean doddle! The dirt cylinder detatches from the body of the machine. It has a little "lid" on the bottom holding all the dirt in. You then simply take the cylinder to the bin and press a button on the top of the cylinder which opens the "lid" and out falls the dirt into the bin. You don't have to touch the dirty bit at all. The "lid" does need a hand to press it closed again but I usually do this on the edge of the bin. Then just pop the cylinder back on the body of the machine and away you go again.

The hose on this machine is so cleverly stored that it took me a while to work out how to release it (I hate reading instructions). My hubby didn't even realise it was there and rang me up at work one day to find out where I'd put it! However, once you work out where it is and how to release it its easy peasy.

I never realised how dirty my carpets were until I got this vacuum cleaner. In fact, every time I use it I'm amazed at how much dirt it has sucked up. Makes me feel like my house must have been filthy before but also makes me feel nice and clean knowing all the dirt is now being removed.

I've put this machine through a lot. It has tackled all sorts of mank that's ended up on my floor, but its not let me down yet. If you're not careful it will even suck up socks and other fairly large objects.

I'm not being over-generous with my ratings on this cleaner, I really do think its a brilliant model and wish I'd invested in one years ago.

Summary: A brilliant cleaner which is simple to use and easy to store

Our old Dyson seems to have curled up and died in the cupboard under the stairs, so we've been thinking about buying this particular model as a replacement. Very good review :)
