Dyson DC18 All Floors
Advantages: Slim, lightweight, 5 year guarantee
Disadvantages: Not very good to clean the car
Although I spent a few years selling Dyson vacuum cleaners (and others, in an electrical store) I didn't buy one until recently. Partly because Dysons were more expensive than other brands, and also because, despite being bagless, the filters needed to be replaced regularly, so 'running costs' were no cheaper either. However, I was recently in the market for a new vacuum cleaner (having had two break down in a relatively short period) and decided to look at the current Dyson models, finally deciding on the DC18. A year and a half later I'm still impressed with it and actually enjoy using it!
The DC18 is bagless of course, and being a slimline model it's lighter and takes up a little less space than most other cleaners. However, it has a smaller dust canister requiring it to be emptied regularly, but that's very simple and quick to do. The filters are washable and unlike older Dysons do not need to be replaced. And the front cover where the rotating brush is also comes apart easily for cleaning or removing any obstructions. Despite the plastics looking and feeling a bit brittle the build quality is very good. It's also important to point out that it has a 5 year guarantee, which in these days of 'they don't make things like they used to', is excellent.
Using the DC18 is a joy. The small back wheels spring up when in use and because it moves on the main ball it is much more maneuverable than other conventional vacuum cleaners. Suction is great and it has no problems cleaning carpets, lino or wooden flooring, either using the main rotating brush or the hose, its little attachments easily removed and replaced on the back of the cleaner. My only gripe (and the reason it gets 4, not 5 stars) is that the long tube at the end of the hose is not telescopic or removable. This isn't an issue in my house although it may be for others, but it makes it very awkward to clean inside the car. I'm aware Dyson sell a 'car kit' but this does cost extra, around £35. I have also tried cleaning our carpets using Dyson's 'Zorb' powder and wasn't impressed. The damp granules got everywhere and clogged up the vacuum cleaner aswell, and the carpets weren't much cleaner than before. I wouldn't mark the DC18 down for this but feel it's a relevant point to mention.
I'm converted, and would happily recommend a Dyson, specifically the DC18, to anyone!
